The New York Jets were among a shortlist of teams that made some of the most significant organizational changes this offseason, including a new general manager, head coach, and starting quarterback.

Coach Aaron Glenn hand-picked quarterback Justin Fields to lead Gang Green in 2025 on what will hopefully be a stronger sprint to the playoffs than we’ve become accustomed to. The Jets haven’t made a postseason appearance since 2010, when they lost in the AFC Championship to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Yeah, it’s been that long since the Jets played meaningful football.

However, there’s real buzz around this team in 2025. Perhaps that’s what naturally accompanies change, but there’s no doubt that the Jets have a playoff-caliber defense; all that’s been missing is an offense that can do its part.

And while Fields still has tantalizing upside, his limitations as a passer could cap the overall upside of New York’s offense, which is why a recent breakdown of teams currently in a playoff drought that can finally snap that ominous streak, the Jets weren’t one.

“The AFC East and conference are hell, and Fields couldn’t make the cut as a passer in Chicago and Pittsburgh,” Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon wrote. “I’m not entirely counting the Jets out, but it’s hard to see a path unless Fields shocks the football world.”

I wouldn’t go as far as to say the AFC East is hell, but it would qualify as a massive shock if the Jets can compete with the Buffalo Bills. But, the New England Patriots? The Miami Dolphins?  A reality exists in which New York could have a better season than bot AFC East foes.

Still, Gang Green is in a transition year. If they can hover around .500 by the time the calendar flips to December, anything is possible regarding the playoffs. But if the wheels fall off early in the 2025 season, a 15-year streak will sadly become 16.
