Much ado has been made about who the Philadelphia 76ers could trade for. Hardly anything has been made about who they could add via free agency.
There has been speculation about potentially adding D’Angelo Russell if the Nets waive him, but nothing should be made of that until he becomes a free agent, which remains to be seen.
For now, if the Sixers want to add players via free agency, they should focus on available players. It appears that they are.
NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that the Sixers are among the teams interested in Lonnie Walker IV. He added that there is a window for an NBA team to add him.
“Lonnie Walker IV is drawing NBA interest and can be bought out of his Žalgiris contract in the EuroLeague by any NBA team until Feb. 18. Potential suitors said to include Sixers, Wolves, Heat, Nuggets and Celtics,” Stein wrote.
Walker was on the Celtics’ preseason roster but was cut just before the season started. He last played in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets during the 2024 season.
Walker was a playoff hero for the Los Angeles Lakers
The season before he joined the Nets, Walker played for the Lakers. In a crucial Game 5 against the Golden State Warriors, Walker scored 15 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, which helped the Lakers take a decisive 3-1 lead that ultimately ended the series.
Even if it was only one performance, it was good enough to entice teams like the Sixers, that want players ready to play in the playoffs.
Even after their porous start, Philadelphia still has the same playoff aspirations when the season started. Of all the players available via free agency, Walker is arguably the best one.
