Not all professional achievements are equal.
Some, like Joel Embiid’s 70-point outburst against the Spurs, are laced with sugar, spice and everything nice. Embiid was showered with praise for his dominant display, the Sixers big man proving undeterred by the challenge of facing the sport’s present and future in San Antonio rookie Victor Wembanyama.
Embiid paraded for the masses to see. Karl-Anthony Towns didn’t get that treatment.
The same night Embiid broke records, Towns had one of his own. The Timberwolves star scored 62 points, 44 of which came in the first half, against a hapless Hornets defense.
With his explosion, Towns set a new franchise record for points in a single game.

However, there was only one problem: Minnesota lost, blowing an 18-point lead to fall 128-125 to 10-31 Charlotte.
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch was not satisfied with his team’s effort. He made sure to let reporters know after the matter, criticizing Minnesota for what he called an “absolutely disgusting performance of defense and immature basketball.”
“There were a lot of immature performances here throughout the squad,” finch said. “We totally disrespected the game, ourselves, and we got exactly what we deserved.”
Towns shined in the first half, looking like a basketball wonder under the bright lights of the Target Center. He made 14 of his first 17 shot attempts, helping the Wolves overcome an unusually calm Anthony Edwards who proved to be ahead.
According to Edwards, the lights became too bright for Finch’s team as the second half wore on. The reason why? Minnesota was too concerned about getting Towns’ stats out of him.
“Once he hit his first six or seven shots, I think everyone was trying to see him get a hundred points.” Edwards said. “I know. I think we all wanted to see him get to 80 or whatever. But we’ll learn from it.”
Towns scored just four points in the fourth quarter. A desperation missed three-pointer, along with a layup attempt that was rejected in the final seconds of the game, ensured that he became one of 10 players to drop 60 points in a loss.
It’s not a list Towns wants to be on.
“To have a night like that after a loss doesn’t feel very good or historic.” peoples said. “We are number one in the West, one of the best teams in the NBA; there is no time for moral victories, positives, ‘great night, but not the ending we wanted’. We have to find a way to win.”
