The AFC Asian Cup 2023 has now entered the knockout phase, with the first matches of the round of 16 taking place on Saturday, January 27.
Host nation Qatar were among the most impressive performers during the group stage as continental heavyweights Japan and South Korea found life much more difficult, although both nations managed to earn a place in the second phase.
Australia also advanced and will begin the round of 16 with their match against Indonesia, which managed to advance thanks to a victory over Vietnam despite losing its other two group stage matches.
All matches now become single knockout ties, where extra time and a penalty shootout will be required if the score is tied between the teams. The quarterfinals await the eight winners of the round of 16, while the defeated nations will return home.

AFC Asian Cup 2023 format
The 2023 AFC Asian Cup will feature 24 teams for the second consecutive tournament after opting for an expansion of 16 ahead of the 2019 edition.
Teams are divided into six groups of four (AF) and the two best teams in each mini-league automatically qualify for the knockout stage of the round of 16.
As that process only confirms 12 spots, the remaining four spots will be awarded to the best third-place finishers, as decided by the tiebreaker criteria below.

Starting with the round of 16, all matches are simple knockouts, with 30 minutes of extra time and the possibility of penalties if the results are tied after the regulation 90 minutes.
The quarterfinals will be followed by two semifinals and a final, but there will be no playoff for third place.
