The NFL has seen a slew of coaching changes this offseason, with several teams moving on from Super Bowl-winning head coaches, but the Big Red is still going strong.
Andy Reid has the Chiefs back in the AFC championship for the sixth straight year, and the future Hall of Famer continues to do his best work against coaches who once worked on his staff.
Reid got another playoff win over a former assistant when the Chiefs eliminated Sean McDermott’s Bills in the divisional round, and he has a chance to get one more when Kansas City faces John Harbaugh and the Ravens on Sunday.
Here’s a closer look at Reid’s record against former assistants, both in the regular season and playoffs.
Andy Reid’s record against former assistants
Reid is 22-9 general against his former assistants, including a perfect 5-0 in the playoffs.
Eleven coaches who worked under Reid became NFL head coaches, and 10 of them (consider yourself lucky, David Culley) faced the two-time Super Bowl champion. Their track record is largely unsuccessful. McDermott is 4-1 against Reid in the regular season, but that record is negated by playoff struggles.
Outside of McDermott, the only former Reid assistant with an undefeated record against his former boss is Leslie Frazier, who went 1-0 against Reid while coaching the Vikings but notably coordinated a Bills defense that struggled to contain Mahomes. in 2020 and 2021. playoffs.
Which former assistants have coached against Andy Reid?
All but one of the head coaches in Reid’s coaching tree have coached against their former boss. Only David Culley, who lasted only one season with the Texans, did not.

POWER RANKINGS: How the 49ers, Chiefs, Ravens and Lions can win the Super Bowl
McDermott has easily had the most regular-season success against Reid of his former assistants, going 4-1, but he and the Bills are winless in three playoff matchups.
Harbaugh expects the opposite effect. He has largely battled Reid since he took the reins of the Ravens 16 years ago, but this will be the first playoff matchup between the two Super Bowl-winning coaches.
No former McDermott and Harbaugh assistant has more than one victory over Reid. Ron Rivera and Doug Pederson have just one win in seven combined meetings with Reid, Leslie Frazier is the only one who can claim to be undefeated as a head coach against his former boss, even if it’s just a one-game sample.
Has any former assistant beaten Andy Reid in the playoffs?
Reid has never lost to a former assistant of his in the playoffs. He has earned three playoff wins over McDermott’s Bills in the Mahomes-Allen era, and also has playoff wins over Brad Childress (2008) and Doug Pederson (2022) to round out the unblemished record.
However, Harbaugh’s Ravens are always a tough exit in the playoffs, and he will get his first chance against Reid on the biggest stage with the home crowd behind his team on Sunday.
