One of my biggest complaints after vacuuming is the arduous task of filling a bucket and wringing out a mop to clean my hardwood floors. And since my house is 90% wood and tile, I’ve always loved the idea of having an all-in-one vacuum cleaner that does the job for you.
So you can imagine my excitement when I got my hands on the new Dyson V15s Detect Submarine, the brand’s first wet and dry vacuum cleaner. Finally, a cordless vacuum cleaner that mops!
Although wet and dry robot vacuums are already available on the market, this is Dyson’s latest addition to its innovative range. This is also a follow-up to their Dyson 360 Vis smart robot vacuum, which I also tested.
It’s no surprise that the Submarine is designed with the same precision: the head has a motorized microfiber roller to remove spills, tough stains and marks. It comes with eight water jets, evenly spaced along the roller, and 18 ml of water is released every minute to thoroughly wash your floors. The dirty water is then sucked into a separate 360 milliliter chamber for easy emptying.
Sounds pretty impressive – with that in mind, I put the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine to the test in my home to find out if it’s the answer to all my cleaning woes.
Easy to use
Basically, the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine has a similar design to the Dyson V15s Detect Absolute, but comes with a selection of advanced cleaning heads.
This includes the standard Digital Motor Stick Cleaner Head for deep carpet cleaning, the Optical Fluffy Cleaner Head, the Hair Screw Tool, the Crevice/Combination Tool, and of course, the Submarine Mop Head.
Like everything dison vacuum cleanersThe different heads are easy to attach and swap by simply clicking on the characteristic red buttons and pressing them to remove them.
It’s also lightweight, weighing 9 pounds, and easy to maneuver around the room thanks to its swivel head. I found it easy to fix my hardwood floors and tiles in a short time, without it being a tiring task.
Additionally, it comes with a 60-minute battery life, making it less heavy than previous models. However, I would recommend putting it in Eco mode to get the most out of the battery life.
It is also easy to remove the water tank/chamber from the wet roller head, unscrew the cap and fill it with clean water. Unlike traditional mopping, no hot or warm water is used, only room temperature, and no detergent such as dish soap is used.
I was worried that my floors were simply washed and not properly disinfected, so I asked the team at Dyson if I could add a drop of disinfectant to the water, and they said I could, as long as it didn’t foam inside the tank. I then simply slid the tank back into place on the head of the Submarine, before attaching it to the stick.
What’s more, the entire process took less than a minute, compared to filling a mop bucket with hot water and soap! Now I was ready to see how well it could tackle my hardwood floors and tiles.
Verdict
After using Dyson V15s Detect Submarine to clean my living room and kitchen/bathroom. I was pleasantly surprised. With its exceptional suction power, it quickly washed my floors in two sweeps, which seemed much cleaner. Drying time was also quick, removing wet fingerprints, and I could still detect a hint of my fresh disinfectant.
Plus, it didn’t leave a saturated floor, like some traditional and steam mops tend to do. Additionally, without a heating element, there is less risk of ruining hardwood floors, such as when a steam mop damaged my floors due to the humidity of the steam. Plus, the LED display on the handle tells you how much clean water is left, in case you need to address other points.
Cleaning is also very easy, as you simply empty the dirty water tank and rinse the brush roll thoroughly with water. And the handy drip tray ensures no spills on the floor.
Perhaps the only drawback is that as the roller picks up dirt from the floor, it can leave streaks. This is especially noticeable when I stopped the movement a little; in which case, I had to go over the area again to remove any unsightly marks. However, considering the sheer power of the Dyson V15s Submarine, this isn’t a real deal breaker.
Another caveat is that if you already own a Dyson Absolute cordless vacuum, the Submarine wet roller head will not be compatible. And considering its incredible price tag of almost $1,000, you should probably consider whether it’s really worth the upgrade.
But if, like me, you’re looking for an all-in-one cordless vacuum cleaner that offers impressive power, versatility, and convenience, I’d happily trade in my old model any time!
