Delays and authentication issues can often prevent you from browsing the Internet. However, there is another problem you may encounter: conflicting IP addresses. It is relatively common and can prevent your device from connecting to the web.
This article will discuss intellectual property conflicts. We tell you what causes this problem and how you can solve it.
Intellectual property conflict detected: what does it mean?
Servers use your IP address to identify a device when it is connected. There cannot be two identical IP addresses. If a network detects two devices with the same address, it will not be able to distinguish them, causing connectivity problems.
Rebooting the router is usually sufficient.
- Turn off the router by pressing the power button.

- Wait 5 to 10 minutes to ensure the network and router are completely turned off.

- Restart the router and reconnect the device to the Internet.

If you have a USB or wireless adapter, disabling the device and re-enabling it may fix the problem.
- Press and hold the Windows and R keys to open the Run window.

- Enter “ncpa.cpl” and press “OK.”

- Right click on your adapter and disable it.

- Re-enable the adapter by right-clicking on it and pressing “Enable.”

- Restart the device, establish an Internet connection and see if the conflict is gone.
Fix IP conflicts detected with an ASUS router
The most common reason ASUS routers get conflicting addresses is that one of the LAN ports is not connected to the correct slot. Instead of binding it to a WAN port, you may have connected it to your ISP’s router or modem.
This is how you can solve the problem.
- Examine the back of your router.

- Find the WAN port.

- Make sure your Ethernet cable is connected to your WAN port.

- Reboot the router and there should be no more conflicts.
Resolve IP conflicts detected with a SonicWALL router
If you receive an IP conflict notification through SonicWALL, it probably means that there is more than one device running DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). The solution is relatively simple. Requires that you disable DHCP services to ensure that SonicWALL is used as the primary source of the IP address.
- Go to the router menu on your computer.

- Turn off DHCP services.

- Request an IP for the PC. You can do this by typing “ipconfig/release” and “ipconfig/renew” at the command prompt.

- Wait for the system to assign a unique address.
If the problem persists, you can assign a static address to each connected device. Follow the steps below to do it:
- Navigate to the SonicWALL menu.

- Go to your DHCP server window.

- Click the “Add Static Entry” menu.

- Enter the media access address of the device that will receive the new IP. Do the same for as many devices as necessary.
Your intellectual property conflict problems should now be history. Please note that you should only use this solution for smaller networks. It can cause other problems on larger systems.
IP conflict detected: DHCP error
If a DHCP server detects IP conflicts, it is usually a good thing for your system. These attempts determine whether your server has pinged the available IP addresses before handing them out to other users. If the ping is successful, it means that an address already exists on your network. In this case, the platform will not grant access to the address, keeping you safe.
For this reason, enabling DHCP conflict detection can be a great idea. You’ll just need to make a few adjustments.
- Open your DHCP administrative console.

- Browse your console tree and click the DHCP server you want to modify.

- Click “Properties” on the “Action” menu. You may also need to check IPv4. Configuring an IPv6 scope is impossible.

- Go to “Advanced.”

- Enter the number of attempts after which you will receive a ping. For example, less than 5 or 6 should work very well for most networks.

- Click the “OK” button to save the changes.

IP address conflict detected with Shortel service
Mitel bought ShoreTel a few years ago. The transition simplified the service but did not solve all the problems. One of the problems that users notice is the IP address conflict.
If you can also see this on your screen, there could be some culprits on your network. In most cases, it is something that was already on the system but was only revealed when you performed an update. For example, the DHCP server may not recognize changed IPs or there may be phones statically connected to the network.
Either way, a reboot should get you over the hump. Here’s what you need to do on your IP 400 series phone:
- Press the Mute key. It must contain a microphone and a bar.

- Dial 25327 to issue a CLEAR command and press the # symbol.

- If your phone does not restart automatically, use the clear soft key.

- The phone should now reboot and you should see “Assign User” on your screen.

The procedure is slightly different for Cisco 7900 series phones. The 7940 and 7960 models require the following actions:
- Press and hold # key while connecting phone

- Wait for the screen to display the “Factory Reset” message. The wording may vary depending on your device.

- Release the # key and enter the following combination: 123456789*0#

- The device should allow you to decide whether or not to save your settings. Decline this offer by pressing number 2.

- Let the device reboot, which may take a few minutes.
Rebooting Cisco 7971, 7970, 7965, 7961 and 7410 looks like this.
- Press and hold # while connecting the device

- Wait for the indicator buttons to light sequentially.

- Release # and enter the combination 123456789*0#.

- Your phone should now turn black and reboot to factory settings.
Resetting these phones may also involve these steps.
- Press and hold the # button while connecting the phone.

- The indicator buttons should light up one after the other. When this happens, release the # key and enter this combination: 3491672850*#.

- The buttons should now turn red, which means the device is rebooting multiple times. The process takes a long time and some devices require 6-7 hours to reboot. Leave the phone idle until it is complete.
The easiest device to reboot is the Cisco 7937 conference phone.
- Press the application button.

- Enter **1 and the phone should reboot.
