The Investigation Discovery documentary series Silence on the set: The dark side of children’s television has dominated pop culture conversations since its premiere, and now viewers are speculating that there will be a surprise fifth episode.
The series, which includes testimonials from several former child stars, including Drake Bell ofDrake and Joshand Bryan Hearne and Giovonnie Samuels ofEverything thatexplores the toxic culture behind popular children’s shows of the late ’90s and early ’00s, particularly those created by Dan Schneider for Nickelodeon.
The network announced that the series would contain four parts, but Google and rotten tomatoes lists a fifth installment titled “Breaking the Silence,” which will air on April 7, 2024.
Jugo Mobile reached out to ID for clarification, but they did not respond by the time of publication.
It is likely that Silence on set It consists of four episodes and the fifth episode is false information. So far there has been no official confirmation of the continuation of the series.
In addition to press releases repeatedly referring to the “four-part” series, directors and executive producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz recently alluded to the series being four hours long in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
While discussing the potential for a second season, Robertson said, “We’d be happy to spend four more hours on this topic.”
Those who follow the rumors have expressed frustration at the network for not offering clarification, with one writing, “I wish Investigation Discovery’s Twitter would at least tweet something to confirm this and promote it if it’s true.” Others theorize that the network is scrambling to release more to “take advantage of how big and viral the documentary is,” or that Amanda Bynes will speak out about her experience with Schnieder.
A report last week alleged that Bynes refused to be interviewed for Silence on set because he didn’t have a “bad experience” working with Nickelodeon.
Following the backlash from the docu-series, Schneider apologized, saying, “I face my past behaviors, some of which are shameful and I regret it… and I definitely owe some people a pretty strong apology.”
A spokesperson for Schneider denied that he sexualized children in his work. “Everything that happened on the shows Dan directed was carefully vetted by dozens of adults involved and approved by the network. “If there had been scenes or clothing that were inappropriate in any way, they would have been flagged and blocked for this multi-level scrutiny,” the spokesperson wrote.
