Anne Hathaway recently opened up about the unfortunate turn her career took after winning an Oscar for her performance in them Miserablesrevealing that director Christopher Nolan played a major role in getting her career back on track.
In an interview with vanity fairThe actress revealed that the “toxic” online hate she received after winning the Oscar seriously affected her career.
“A lot of people didn’t give me papers because they were so worried about how toxic my online identity had become,” she told the outlet.
She then praised Nolan for casting her in the 2014 sci-fi epic. Interstellar having previously worked together on The dark knight rises. Nolan’s support, he said, helped turn his career around just in time.
“I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who didn’t care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve ever had in one of the best movies I’ve ever been a part of,” he said. “I don’t know if he knew he had my back at the time, but he had that effect. And my career didn’t lose momentum like it might have if he hadn’t had my back.”
Dubbed “Hathahate,” the hate campaign Hathaway faced wasn’t just from netizens who were upset with her serious approach to acting. She also inspired opinion pieces by The New York Times and The New Yorker.
Hathaway candidly addressed that difficult period of time.
“Humiliation is a very hard thing to endure,” he said. “The key is not to let that shut you down.”
She continued: “You have to be bold and it can be hard because you think, ‘If I stay safe, if I embrace the medium, if I don’t draw too much attention to myself, it won’t hurt.'” .’ But if you want to do that, don’t be an actor. You are a tightrope walker. You are a daredevil. You are asking people to invest their time, their money, their attention and their care in you.”
And he added: “So you have to give them something that is worth all those things. And if it doesn’t cost you anything, what are you really offering?
