If you use WhatsApp for business or socializing, you may want to delete messages. Maybe you sent a message with typos by mistake or attached the wrong images or attachments. Alternatively, you may have sent a message to the wrong recipient. Fortunately, the “Delete for everyone” function will help solve the problem.
This article explains how to delete messages for everyone on different devices. We will also look at possible ways to delete a message even after the time limit has passed.
Delete for everyone
This feature allows you to delete messages sent to a group or inpidual chat. It is a useful feature that allows you to delete messages sent to the wrong recipient or delete messages with errors. Additionally, group administrators can delete any inappropriate messages. In that case, “This message was deleted” replaces the original message.
To delete sent messages on the web and desktop for everyone, follow these steps:
- Find the chat that contains the message you want to delete.
- Click “Menu.”
- Click on the “Delete message” option.
- Choose “Delete for everyone.”
As a group administrator, you can delete messages from all members if a participant sends something inappropriate. The message displayed after deletion is: “This message was deleted by the administrator (name of the administrator who deleted it).” If a group participant sends an incorrect message, you can delete it by following the steps above.
Delete by yourself
WhatsApp users can delete copies of received or sent messages themselves without affecting the recipient. This is what you need:
- Access the chat that contains the message you want to delete.
- Choose “Menu” in the chat.
- Click “Delete message” and choose “Delete for me.”
Please note that the action can be undone within 5 seconds by choosing undo. Once that period of time has passed, the message is permanently deleted.
Delete on Android
If you are using WhatsApp on Android, the following steps will allow you to delete everyone:
- Access the chat with the destination message.
- Tap the message and hold it. If you want to delete many messages at once, select them by tapping and holding to highlight them.
- Tap the “Delete” icon at the top of the chat tab.
- Click the “Delete for everyone” option. “You deleted this message” will replace the original message.
The steps above can also be used in group chats, where administrators can delete messages posted by participants if they don’t follow their guidelines.
Delete for everyone on iPhone
The delete option for everyone on iPhone involves a similar process.
- Click on the chat with the message you are targeting.
- Tap the message and hold it. From the delete menu, choose “Delete.” You can choose multiple messages to delete at once.
- Choose “Delete for everyone.”
Group administrators can follow the same steps to delete messages to manage their communities and private groups.
If you choose to delete for everyone, there are a few things you should know:
- Both parties must have the latest version of WhatsApp.
- Recipients using iOS can have media you sent saved in photos even if you deleted it from the chat on WhatsApp.
- There are chances that the recipients have already seen the message before deleting it or in case the deletion was not successful.
- If the removal was not successful, you will not receive a notification.
- You have two days to delete a message. This includes group administrators.
- Group participants will know who deleted the message for everyone.
- Deleted messages cannot be appealed or recovered.
Delete for both after the two-day limit has passed
There is a two-day time limit if you want to delete messages for everyone. However, there are cases where it is still necessary to delete a message even after the time limit. If that is the case, you can change the time and date on your phone. This causes WhatsApp to believe that the time limit has not yet been exceeded, allowing the above steps to be used on iPhone and Android.
On iPhone
To delete a message for everyone after it has passed the limit on iPhone, follow these steps:
- Check the date and time the message was sent.
- Turn your phone back on and enable “Airplane Mode.”
- In settings, choose “General” and tap “Date & time.”
- If “Set automatically” is on, turn it off. Next, set the time and date to be close to or earlier than the date and time of the message you want to delete.
- Without deactivating “Airplane Mode”, open WhatsApp and delete the message in question for everyone.
On Android
This is what the process looks like on Android:
- Make a note of the time and date the message was sent and close the app.
- Go to “Settings” and then tap “Apps & notifications” or “Application.”
- Choose WhatsApp and “Force Stop” or “Force Close” and tap “OK.” This freezes the application and it does not run.
- Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi.
- Go to date and time settings.
- Turn off automatic date and time and set it to a time before the message is sent.
- Open WhatsApp and delete the target message(s) for everyone. Mobile data and Wi-Fi should remain turned off until you have done this. Return to normal date and time settings once the message is successfully deleted. Deleted messages will no longer be on your device.
Things to remember if you delete messages for everyone after the set limit
If you delete a message after the set limit by following the steps above, the receipt can be quickly recovered from your WhatsApp backup if it is active. However, the sent media may already be saved in photos or the corresponding folder. You cannot make modifications if that is the case.
When you choose a message that is too old, this trick may not work. Instead, WhatsApp will notify you that your phone’s date and time are inaccurate and need to be adjusted.
