Chances are, you spend less time cleaning your house than you think, and even worse, your floors most likely aren’t as clean as you think. And now Dyson wants to address that.
The vacuum cleaner and the appliance manufacturer on Tuesday (April 9) sleepless a new tool called Dyson CleanTrace that will help you clean your floors better, thanks to the power of augmented reality (AR). CleanTrace is a Dyson Gen5Detect accessory that allows you to position your iPhone. From there, you’ll need to launch the Dyson app and activate the CleanTrace feature to have it scan your floor and give you visual feedback on where it is. vacuumed and where you didn’t.
In an image shared with a statement on Tuesday, Dyson showed how users can look at the iPhone screen and see a purple covering over the areas where they cleaned the floor. In areas where they did not, the floor will still be visible. When you clean that area of the floor, the Dyson app will cover it in purple. That, combined with the Gen5Detect’s particle detection technology, could go a long way in suggesting that the floor is actually clean.
“LiDAR technology on the user’s phone allows Dyson CleanTrace to map their room and overlay cleaning routes using AR that show them where they’ve cleaned and what they’ve missed,” Dyson said in a statement. “The existing technology within Dyson Gen5Detect simultaneously acoustically detects and counts dust particles, demonstrating deep cleaning.”
Vacuuming the floor has always been a decidedly undesirable task for many. According to the Dyson study, the vast majority of people tend to overestimate the amount of time they spend cleaning. In fact, the company’s data found that 80 percent of people typically clean their floors for less than 10 minutes, even though they claim to have vacuumed for 24 minutes.
That disconnection creates a problem. While users who think they have vacuumed for an extended period of time think their floors are spotlessly clean, they are actually not as clean as they expected.
Still, Dyson CleanTrace isn’t for everyone. Since the device uses LiDAR technology, and Apple devices are the only smartphones that work with LiDAR, it would seem that Android users are out. However, it is unknown if that will change over time.
Dyson’s CleanTrace will launch in June and software to pair with Gen5Detect will be available as an update to the MyDyson app at that time.
