Controversial outside the ring, Jared Anderson seeks to let his fists do the talking inside the ring. “The Real Big Baby” headlines a show in Corpus Christi against Ryad Merhy on April 13. The fight airs on ESPN+ in the US.
Anderson, a two-time US National Championship gold medalist, signed with Top Rank in 2019. The 24-year-old defeated Vladimir Tereshkin for the NABF heavyweight title in 2021. He defeated Charles Martin by unanimous decision in July 2023, the first time he covered the distance. In his last fight in August, Anderson defeated Andriy Rudenko by technical knockout.
Before the fight, Anderson was involved in a police chase that saw him going about 130 MPH. He also improperly handled firearms while knowingly under the influence of alcohol in a separate incident. Detractors believe he is not serious about boxing or being a role model for children.
Despite his legal troubles, Anderson presses forward, no matter how controversial the situation.

“It’s not really going to derail my career. It’s just an eye-opener that will make me try harder,” Anderson said. ESPN. “When you see my performance on April 13, know that you won’t have anything to worry about. I’m always training, even when people wanted to try to tear me down and say I wasn’t focused. Even when I had that incident, I was still training… I think I’m just getting started. I’ve barely scratched the surface so far. “I’m really ready to go to the next level.”
Merhy turned professional in 2013. The 31-year-old failed to capture the WBA cruiserweight title in 2018 against Arsen Goulamirian, but won the interim belt in 2019 against Imre Szello and was eventually promoted to full-time champion. He was stripped of the title after refusing to face Goulamirian, among other contenders. Merhy last fought in December, beating Tony Yoka by decision.
