For the past few console generations, capturing gameplay using built-in tools has been part of the experience. Sony wants to turn those gameplay captures into something more useful with the Community Gaming Help Recently Announced feature for PlayStation 5. Basically, the feature will offer clips and hints from other players to help you overcome difficult points in a video game when it launches later this year.
How Community Play Help Will Work
Having video help built into the console could make finding a solution much more accessible than searching for one on YouTube. Additionally, clips are captured automatically, so the player who has successfully completed the challenging part will not have to do anything else to help their fellow PlayStation players. Of course, it’s an optional experience, so you won’t have to worry about your gameplay clips contributing to useful clips if you don’t want them to.
If you’ve opted in, your PS5 will automatically record a gameplay clip when you successfully complete an activity in a supported game. For example, if you defeated a difficult boss in a future Dark Souls game, that clip would be captured, reviewed by a moderator, and posted as a game help tip for other players to watch and learn from.
Game developers can also participate by capturing useful clips that can be used to guide players to secret locations or through difficult areas of a game.
Help videos are available in the PlayStation app, so you can leave the game open on your console while you figure out how to get past a part you’re stuck on.
Sony said the feature is scheduled to launch “in the coming months,” so you’ll need to be patient if you’re interested in helping or receiving help from the PlayStation gaming community.
How to use the PS5 community game help feature
Once the feature launches, you can choose to share your gameplay captures via the following settings:
- Go to Captures and Retransmissions
- Select captures
- Select Automatic Captures
- Select community game help
- Select Participate, which will allow you to participate in the program.
If you change your mind and do not want to participate in the program, you can reverse the above to cancel your participation and your game will not be automatically shared. Again, these options aren’t available yet and aren’t scheduled to launch for a few months, so you won’t see them on your PS5 yet.
Availability will be limited to certain games, although Sabrina Meditz, senior director of product management for PS5 platform experience at Sony, said: “Community Game Help will begin to be available in select games later this year, and we aim to is to expand it to as many titles as possible in the future.”
