Dustin Poirier last fought for UFC gold in 2021, losing to Charles Oliveira. Since then, he has worked to build his way back. “The Diamond” will get another shot at a belt when he takes on Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 302 on June 1.
Makhachev, a multiple-time sambo gold medalist, is 14-1 with the UFC and on a thirteen-fight winning streak. The Russian defeated Oliveira in 2022 to win the UFC lightweight title. In his last two fights, Makhachev defeated Alexander Volkanovski to retain the title.
Makhachev wants to stay busy and although he doesn’t believe Poirier deserves a shot at his title, he is ready to take on any challenge.

Poirier is 22-7 with one no-contest inside the octagon. He is a former interim lightweight champion who lost to champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019. The 35-year-old lost to Oliveira in 2021 following a series against Conor McGregor and has since gone 2-1. His last fight was a knockout victory in March against Benoit Saint-Denis.
