MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet app built for the Ethereum blockchain. You can access it through the MetaMask mobile app or web browser extension. Since you can set different passwords for the mobile app and the browser extension, it’s easy to confuse them or forget one. That is why you should know how to change your MetaMask password on both devices.

In this article, we will show you how to change your password in the MetaMask mobile app and web browser extension on your PC. Additionally, you will learn how to view your recovery passphrase on both devices.

How to change your password in MetaMask

Every time you access your MetaMask wallet, you must first enter your password. Please note that MetaMask is a non-custodial cryptocurrency and token wallet. In other words, you are the sole custodian of your assets. Any data about your MetaMask wallet, such as your password, username, or email address, will not be stored in the MetaMask database. Instead, all your data is displayed locally, either in the mobile app or in the browser extension.

It’s easy to change your password in MetaMask when you know what it is. However, if you do not remember your MetaMask password, you will need to reset it. This is done using the Recovery Passphrase, which is basically a key to your MetaMask wallet. Your recovery passphrase is provided to you when you first create your account and you cannot change it. It can be 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24 words. What’s more, you can’t access it without a password, which creates a vicious cycle, so it’s important to write it down somewhere when creating your account.

How to change your password in MetaMask on an iPhone

First, let’s see how you would change your password in MetaMask on your iPhone:

1. Open the MetaMask app on your iPhone.
   
2. Enter your current password.
   
3. Select the “Login” button.
   
4. Tap the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner of the screen.
   
5. Proceed to the “Security and Privacy” tab.
   
   Note: This is where you can see your secret recovery phrase.
6. Look for “Change Password” in the list of options.
   
7. Enter the new password.
   
8. Confirm your new password.
   

That’s all about it. If you don’t see the “Change Password” option, you’ll need to reset your password with the recovery passphrase. This is the same solution you will need to use if you don’t remember your password. Here’s how to do it on an iPhone:

1. Launch the application.
   
2. Tap the three lines in the top left corner.
   
3. Go to “Sign Out” at the bottom of the menu.
   
4. Select the “Import using recovery passphrase” option under the “Unlock” button.
5. Enter your secret recovery phrase.
   
6. Enter your new password and confirm it.
   
7. Tap the “Import” button.
   

Some iPhone versions allow you to sign in to your MetaMask account using Face ID. However, it is still highly recommended that you use a traditional password.

How to change your password in MetaMask on an Android device

The process of changing and restoring your password in MetaMask on an Android device is similar. Follow the steps below to find out how it’s done:

1. Open the app on your Android device.
   
2. Enter your current password and tap the “Unlock” button.
3. Go to the sidebar menu by tapping the three horizontal lines in the top left corner.
   
4. Continue with “Security and privacy.”
   
5. Locate and select the “Change Password” option.
   
6. Enter your new password.
   
7. Confirm your new password.
   

If you don’t remember your password or log in to your account, here’s what you need to do:

1. Run MetaMask.
   
2. Tap the “Import using recovery passphrase” option on the login page.
3. Type your secret recovery phrase in the first field.
   
4. Enter your new password.
   
5. Confirm your new password.
   
6. Select the “Import” button at the bottom.
   

You have to get the secret recovery phrase right. If you try to reset your password with the wrong phrase, your current wallet, accounts, and assets will be deleted from the app permanently.

How to change your password in MetaMask on a PC

If you want to use the MetaMask browser extension, you cannot change the password there directly. However, you can reset it by importing your wallet from the mobile app using your Recovery Passphrase. When you do this in the mobile app, MetaMask gives you the option to sync your mobile app with the browser extension.

If you haven’t done this, or if you don’t use the mobile app at all, here’s how you can reset your MetaMask password on your PC:

1. Open your web browser.
   
2. Click on the MetaMask extension icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
   
3. Proceed to the “Import using recovery passphrase” option on the pop-up window.
   
4. Type or paste your secret recovery phrase” in the first box.
   
5. Choose a new password. It must be at least eight characters.
   
6. Confirm your new password.
   
7. Click the “Import” button.
   

You have successfully changed your MetaMask password. That’s why it’s important to write down your recovery secret phrase somewhere when you first create your account.

When you return to your home page in the browser extension, you will notice that you do not have the option to change your password. You can only see your Secret Recovery Phrase. This is how you do it:

1. Click on your profile photo in the upper right corner.
   
2. Choose “Settings” from the drop-down menu.
   
3. Continue to “Security and privacy” in the left sidebar.
   
4. Go to the “Reveal Recovery Passphrase” button.
   

Please note that if you choose to sync your mobile app and the browser extension, the password you selected for the mobile app will no longer be valid. Instead, the password you set for the browser extension will be the only one you can use. If you have not synced these two MetaMask platforms, you can use two passwords at the same time.

Additionally, if you don’t remember your MetaMask password or recovery passphrase, you won’t be able to access your MetaMask account at all, let alone reset your password.

Secure your MetaMask passwords

While MetaMask does not store any personal information, you risk losing all your accounts if you cannot access your wallet. If you forget your MetaMask password, there is no need to worry. You can easily change or reset your password and quickly restore your account. However, if you forget your recovery passphrase, none of these options will be possible and you will lose all assets and have to create a new account.
