How many reality TV stars does the world need? Of House of villains to The traitors, the last year has been packed with shows featuring a who’s who of reality personalities from all over competing against each other. Prime Video The goat is the latest reality competition show that brings together stars from Survivor, Eldest brother, RuPaul’s Drag Race and more to compete in challenges inspired by those shows. The cast is fun and perse, but honestly, the challenges and host Daniel Tosh seem like a junior version of what we get from similar shows.

THE GOAT: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Initial shot: Host Daniel Tosh walks through the forest and explains: “Throughout human history, there have been many great achievements. The car. Laser hair removal. That was a good one. But nothing has impacted our lives like our greatest achievement of all: reality television. Or as I like to call it, documentaries for dummies.” Tosh goes on to explain that while he appears like The real world, Survivorand american idol have had a huge impact on our culture, until now no one has attempted to determine who is the best person to ever be on a reality show…until now.

The essence: As Tosh jokes, “the 14 best reality contestants [that were available during our production window]” have come together to compete in a series of challenges that draw inspiration from everything from Fear factor to The Real Housewives in a satirical but still competitive way. Contestants appearing on the show include Tayshia Adams. (The Bachelor franchise)Joe Amabile (The Bachelor franchise, dancing with the stars), Kristen Doute (Vanderpump Rules)Reza Farahan (Evening Shahs)CJ Franco (FBoy Island)Wendell Holland (Survivor)Teck Holmes (The real world, the challenge)Justin Johnson aka Alyssa Edwards (RuPaul’s Drag Race)Paola Mayfield (90 day fiancé)Da’Vonne Rogers (Big Brother, The Challenge)Joey Sasso (The circle, perfect combination)Jason Smith (Christmas Baking Championship)Lauren Speed-Hamilton (Love is blind)and Jill Zarin (The Real Housewives of New York City).

That’s a lot of big personalities, which leaves room for a lot of drama, but so far, the cast seems to be supporting each other more than plotting against each other. As The traitors, the Bravo people (Zarin, Doute, and Farahan) instantly form a clique who promise to look out for each other, but since many of the challenges they compete in are unpredictable and rely on physical and mental strength, that group has no real advantage. . still. The first challenges that the competitors participate in are inspired by survival shows, more or less. One is to see who can stand on one leg while balancing a coconut on a board the longest, and it feels the most like Hands on a hard body that Survivor. The second is a team challenge to build a raft, use it to swim or row across a pool, retrieve a key, and unlock a treasure chest.

To be honest, both challenges seem low-cost, like something you could set up in your backyard during a family gathering. Maybe I’m spoiled by the vast castle grounds The traitors either SurvivorThe lush location is filmed, but the scale of the show feels small for something with such a grandiose title. At the end of each episode, the cast eliminates a loser who is exiled, out of the competition for being the GOAT, although let’s face it, it’s hard to imagine any of these people being considered the GOAT of reality TV.

What shows will it remind you of? Where is E! House of villains pitted some of reality TV’s most notorious stars against each other on a show hosted by a guy who once hosted a show mocking reality TV, The goat pits some of reality TV’s most notorious stars against each other on a show hosted by a guy who once hosted a show mocking the Internet. Six of one, half a dozen others from E!

Our opinion: Personally, I feel like the job of a host on a show like this is to get in and out; they set the tone of the show without stealing the focus. Daniel Tosh, however, inserts himself into too many scenes, pretending to be a contestant, wearing costumes, and perting attention from the actual game for laughs that… never come. He’s not a low-key presenter, but unlike Alan Cumming, whose costumes and wit leave us wanting more, Tosh’s brand of humor leaves us wanting much less.

Although Tosh is annoying and the challenges are on a limited budget, the show has its funny moments and the cast’s chemistry is often fun to watch. There doesn’t seem to be a real reason for the competitors gathering – they’re not all villains, nor necessarily fan favorites, and not all of them have won their shows – they’re just a cross-section of fairly successful reality stars whose livelihoods seem to depend. from shows like this when they’re not making club appearances. But at least they’re all visible, reminding us that their ability to strategize and/or deliver great one-liners is the reason they were chosen in the first place. While we’ve certainly seen this show done before and done better, it’s not so much unwatchable as unnecessary.

Sex and skin: None.

Parting Shot: After the first eliminated contestant leaves the mansion, the remaining contestants reflect on their early days on the show. Jill Zarin jokes: “I’m more relaxed doing this than if I were doing Housewives. “This is a vacation for me.” “I didn’t realize things could be so complicated.” FBoy Islandadds CJ Franco. “I didn’t bring enough underwear.”

Performance worth seeing: There are some feisty personalities worth watching and rooting for this season, notably CJ Franco, Alyssa Edwards, and Jason Smith, star of Christmas baking championship (a man and a show I’d never heard of before), all of whom seem like underdogs but have fierce competitive sides.

Memorable dialogue: “Only one can earn the made-up title of GOAT of GOATS,” Tosh explains at the beginning of the show. This is just one of the many disparaging jokes he makes at the show’s expense, winking at the audience and acknowledging the inherent ridiculousness of this Idiocracy we live in.

Our call: I can’t support The goat with absolute enthusiasm or call it must-see television, but I wouldn’t feel right trashing it either because it’s not a bad show either, it just doesn’t have the theatrics of similar shows; in comparison, it has no real hook. It seems like the cast is having a good time and not taking themselves seriously, which is the main reason I suggest you STREAM IT.
