There are many reasons why you may need to zoom in or out in Minecraft. Maybe you need to see items better as you create or update, or maybe you need to take the perfect screenshot.
Whatever the reasons you need to zoom, Minecraft allows you to do so to a certain extent. Console mods and features can also help you achieve the perfect viewing distance.
Read on to learn more about zoom options when playing Minecraft.
How to zoom in Minecraft
Zooming while playing Minecraft is a relatively simple process, depending on the platform you use to play. PC users have a couple more options, but console players can usually use boost features unique to their platform.
PC Method 1: Change Field of View in Options
If you’re on a PC and don’t want to use mods, the only option for you is to adjust your FOV (or field of view). You can access your FOV settings by following these steps:
- Press the ”ESC” key to access the game pause menu.

- Go to Options.

- The first set of bars is the FOV settings. By default, it is set to Normal or 70. If you want to zoom in, go to the first FOV frame and move the slider to the left to decrease the number. You can turn it down to 30 for a narrow and “wide” field of view.

- Press the ”Done” button at the bottom of the screen.

- Return to the game to check your FOV and adjust as necessary.

Method 2 for PC: Using Mods (Java)
Java Edition users can download a mod with more zoom options. Take a look at the steps below to get started:
- Go to optifine.net to download the latest version of the mod from the Downloads tab. Make sure the version matches the version of Minecraft you are currently using. If you are using an older version of Minecraft, select the “Show all versions” option to choose the one that applies to your game.

- (Optional) The mod may ask you to install Java SE if you don’t already have it.
- Once you have installed Java, go to the ”OptiFine” file and install it. Follow the installer’s prompts to complete the process.

- Launch the Minecraft launcher.

- Confirm that OptiFine appears in the game by clicking the “Latest version” box next to the green Play button. If you see OptiFine in the drop-down menu, you’re in good shape.

- Select OptiFine and make sure a small check mark appears to the right of the entry.

- Press the ”Play” button to enter the game.

- Zoom in and out by holding down the ”C” key.
Method 3 for PC: Using a Spyglass (Version 1.17)
Minecraft released a new item in its 1.17 update that helps players get closer to locations. The Spyglass is a craftable item that sets a player’s field of view without having to constantly change it in the options menu. You can make a spyglass with an amethyst shard and two copper ingots.
xbox one
Xbox One users can use a feature already installed on their platform called Magnifier. Works for any game, including Minecraft. To access Magnifier, follow the steps below:
- While playing, press and hold the Xbox logo button until the controller vibrates.
- On the new screen there are options to turn off the console and controller, but in the lower right corner there is an option called Magnifying Glass. Press the overlay squares button or the “View” button in the center of the controller to access it.
- Press ”Yes” to confirm Magnifier activation.
- Use the left shutter button to zoom in and the right shutter button to zoom out. You can also scroll the screen area with the right analog stick.
If you want to keep Magnifier on while you play, press the Xbox button twice. This “locks” the magnification settings so you can continue playing normally. To return to the Magnifier controls, press the Xbox button twice again.
Playstation 4
PlayStation 4 users can also expand their games without using mods. However, a few more steps are needed because the console does not have a dedicated magnification feature. To access Zoom on PS4, see the following steps:
- Press the PlayStation button in the middle of the controller.
- Go to ”Settings” and then ”Accessibility”.
- Select the ”Zoom” option.
- Click the box to enable zoom.
- Exit the menu and start your game.
- Use the PlayStation button + square button to zoom and the circle button to cancel the zoom function. You can also use the directional pad to scroll around the screen in front of you.
nintendo switch
Nintendo Switch users can enable a zoom feature on their console for better viewing while playing Minecraft. To get started, follow the steps below:
- Launch System Settings on the home screen.
- Select ”System” on the left panel and then scroll down to ”Zoom” on the main screen.
- Click or tap Zoom to activate the feature.
- Return to the home screen and start Minecraft.
- Press the Home button or the house button twice to enable Zoom while playing.
- Center the area you want to zoom with either of the analog sticks.
- Use the ”X” button to zoom in and the ”Y” button to zoom out. There is a small green indicator in the right corner of the screen that shows your zoom level. The rectangle next to the indicator tells you where the zoom window is on the screen.
- Press the Home button twice to exit zoom mode.
You can also lock this mode on screen to play with magnification activated. Simply tap the Home button twice to lock the zoom parameters in place. The border will turn gray but remain on the screen to indicate that you are still in zoom mode.
If you want to adjust the zoom parameters again, press the Home button. Pressing it twice ends the zoom mode completely.
How to zoom the map in Minecraft
Maps are a great way to see what’s around you, but sometimes you just need things a little bigger. To make a larger map, you will need your mapping table. Place it and follow the steps below:
- Place the map on the top crafting box of the mapping table.

- Place a sheet of paper in the square below the map.

- Remove the new map from the results box and place it in your inventory.
You can repeat this process up to four times using the new map to make it even larger.
How to Zoom with OptiFine in Minecraft
If you installed the correct version of OptiFine and enabled it in your Minecraft Launcher, you can simply press and hold the “C” key to zoom.
How to zoom in on the camera in Minecraft
You can’t zoom in with basic Minecraft, but you can use mods like OptiFine to create cinematic zooms like those seen in Minecraft YouTube videos.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to use mods, you can also change the FOV in the Options menu.
How to zoom in Minecraft Java
There are a few options for zooming in Minecraft Java. The simplest is to create a Spyglass Shard using an Amethyst Shard and two Copper Ingots. This option is only available if you are running version 1.17.
You can also change the field of view in the Options menu or use mods like OptiFine to zoom in while playing.
How to enlarge the treasure map in Minecraft
You can’t necessarily zoom in on a treasure map, but you can enlarge it using a cartographic table.
If you don’t have a mapping table yet, you can make one on the craft table using two sheets of paper and four wooden boards. For this recipe, you can use any type of wooden board, including oak, jungle, and warped.
Place the pieces of paper in the top left corner square and the top middle square. Use the four boards on the squares under the paper, lining them up so that there are two boards in each space under each paper.

Once you have a cartographic table and have it positioned for use, it’s time to increase the size of the map.
- Add the treasure map to the top slot of the mapping table.

- Place a piece of paper in the slot directly below the treasure map.

- Move the resulting map to your inventory.
You can repeat this process up to four times, which will result in the largest map available in the game.
