Compressed air has long been a necessary evil in my life. As a techie, photography and camera nerd, mechanical watch idiot, and general cleanliness-obsessed inpidual, I find an endless need to remove dust, dirt, and debris.
Turns out my roommate is also a 19 pound pup who sheds an enormous amount. So not only do I use several cans of Dust-Off a month, but I also use at least one lint roller.
Well not yet. Since I bought the Kica Jet Fan 2, on a whim, for about $99, I haven’t spent a dime on compressed air or lint rollers. In fact, in less than a month, this beautifully designed portable electric duster has risen through the ranks and is currently my number one tech gadget. This is why.
Lots of power in a small package
The Kica Jet Fan 2 is a little larger than the palm of my hand and weighs about 10.6 ounces. Well built, an all-aluminum casing gives it a premium feel.
A slider above the on/off button allows you to adjust the speed while in use. The closed jet fan is powered by a brushless DC motor that reaches a maximum of 100,000 revolutions per minute. That translates to a blowing force of 20 meters per second or 45 miles per hour, enough force to easily move my iPhone 12 Mini on a desk.
The built-in 1100 mAh battery takes a while to fully charge (around 3.5 hours) but also lasts quite a long time, depending on usage and fan speed; I tend to recharge once or twice a week.
Keeps my devices spotless
You get two accessories with the Kica Jet Fan 2, a slim nozzle and a wider nozzle. To my surprise, the wider one is much more useful when removing debris.
In addition to removing dust and dirt, you can also use the jet fan to inflate and/or deflate items such as inflatable pool flamingos. I have yet to try this feature, although I suspect the small nozzle will come in handy when I do.
I originally purchased it primarily to keep my photography equipment and mechanical keyboard spotless, but I have also successfully used the Kica Jet Fan 2 to remove dust and dirt from my walls’ artwork, film negatives, vinyl records, video games, video game systems, including my precious transparent orange N64 and much more.
Additionally, the Kica Jet Fan 2 has helped me successfully remove dried dirt and road grime from several bikes and deeply clean a well-used box fan and portable air conditioner.
It also makes the job of removing dust from the home in general easier, although it is better to be prepared with a vacuum cleaner to suck up everything that comes up. I also use its jet power inside my car. With all the doors open, I was able to easily send loose dirt, pollen, pet dander, crumbs, and more far away, saving my vacuum a lot of effort.
Also removes pet hair from clothing.
Speaking of pet dander, this mess is an easy way to remove even the most deeply embedded hair from your fine knit cashmere sweater, without damaging the garment.
Belvedere, my puppy friend, can’t get on the bed. Despite knowing this, it occasionally feels like home there, often when I’m away (and forget to close the bedroom door).
While he’s smart enough to leave his plush place long before I get to the door, a thick layer of pet hair on the comforter always gives him away. In the past, removing such hair could require anywhere from three to eight or more lint rollers. Now I just turn off the duvet with the jet fan for 15 seconds and everything is as good as new.
Persistent doubts about battery life
While researching electric dusters, I was initially tempted to opt for a corded model, as my colleague Anthony Spadafora recommends, but ultimately succumbed to the elegance and hassle-free nature of battery-powered solutions.
This brings me to my number one question about the Jet Fan 2. While the device is great right now, once the battery ruins the bed, it’s nothing more than a $99 aluminum paperweight. That said, Kica includes a one-year warranty for the Jet Fan 2.
Either way, I’m careful not to leave it on the charger for too long and only plug it in when the battery reaches zero. Will this improve my chances of the Kica Jet Fan 2 serving me well in the long run? There’s only one way to know.
I’ll check back later, hopefully with a positive update on the performance of the Jet Fan 2. Until then, keep it clean.
