The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League will look a little different to recent seasons as European football’s governing body implements its expansion plan.
Next season’s tournament will follow what is known as the Swiss model, in which the initial group stage is replaced by a “league stage” consisting of 36 teams instead of the usual 32. In that first round of the tournament, each team will play eight games as they try to qualify among the top eight places to earn a place in the knockout phase (or a two-game playoff for those ranked between 9th and 24th in the standings). ).
From there, we enter a more traditional knockout stage of the competition, with two-legged showdowns in the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals, all before the final at the end of the European club season.
That title match will be played in Germany in 2025, marking the first time the country has hosted the Champions League final since 2015, when Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1 in Berlin.
Where and when is the 2025 Champions League final?
The 2025 UEFA Champions League final will be at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. The stadium is the home of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and was the scene of the 2012 final, when Chelsea defeated Bayern on penalties.
The game is tentatively scheduled to take place on May 31, 2025although UEFA has not officially confirmed this date.
The start time has not yet been decided, but it is likely to follow recent tradition and start at 21:00 CESTwhich 3 pm Eastern Time.
Where will the next Champions League finals be?
UEFA normally selects final venues in blocks of 2 or 3 years, and it has already been confirmed that the 2026 final will take place in Budapest, Hungary.
The 2026 title final is scheduled for the Puskas Arena, which has a capacity of just over 67,000 people.
The decision on the 2027 Champions League final has been delayed, and UEFA is awaiting information from the Italian Football Federation on plans to redevelop the San Siro stadium in Milan.
