The United States is hurtling toward an era-defining 2026 World Cup in its own country, but there are plenty of obstacles along the way as the FIFA championship is still more than two years away.
Gregg Berhalter is back as head coach, having been rehired after his contract expired at the end of the 2022 World Cup, where the United States made it to the round of 16 but lost to the Netherlands.
2024 will prove to be a vital year, marked by the Copa América in the summer when CONCACAF and CONMEBOL come together for a special edition of the South American continental championship.

United States included in Group C of the Copa América 2024
The United States was included in an intriguing Group C for the 2024 Copa América, and is expected to advance to the four-team knockout phase.
Their toughest opponent will undoubtedly be Uruguay, who are in good form under Marcelo Bielsa having beaten Argentina and Brazil in the early stages of CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifying. They will also play group stage matches. against Panama and Bolivia, and the two best teams in Group C will advance to the knockout round.
If they qualify for the quarterfinals, they would face a team emerging from Group D, which includes Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay and a CONCACAF playoff qualifier, either Honduras or Costa Rica.
United States wins the 2023/2024 CONCACAF Nations League
The United States edged out Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals, thanks in large part to a 3-0 first-leg victory at home that set them up to advance. United States U-23 to compete in 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris
While the women’s section of the Olympic Games features a fully professional squad, the men’s competition is restricted to an under-23 tournament.
Teams must field a player roster comprised exclusively of youth team members, with three exemptions per nation. Those three players may be inpidual inpiduals, so head coaches must use their roster selections wisely.

Elimination phase
