The United States is hurtling toward an era-defining 2026 World Cup in its own country, but there are plenty of obstacles along the way as the FIFA championship is still more than two years away.

Gregg Berhalter is back as head coach, having been rehired after his contract expired at the end of the 2022 World Cup, where the United States made it to the round of 16 but lost to the Netherlands.

2024 will prove to be a vital year, marked by the Copa América in the summer when CONCACAF and CONMEBOL come together for a special edition of the South American continental championship.

So far this year, the United States has already won the 2024 CONCACAF Nations League, with a 2-0 victory over Mexico in the final, and the United States earned a first-ever draw against Brazil in an international friendly. This is all part of the preparation for the 2026 World Cup at home.

USMNT schedule, games for 2024

With Gregg Berhalter back at the helm, the United States will play a huge 2024 calendar year that will include games against some of the best international teams in the world. The USMNT 2024 schedule is highlighted by participation in the Copa América, where they were included in a difficult group along with Uruguay, Panama and Bolivia.

The United States secured its third consecutive CONCACAF Nations League title in March, and before the Copa América, the United States challenged itself with a pair of international friendlies in June against Colombia and Brazil.

United States U-23 to compete in 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris

While the women’s section of the Olympic Games features a fully professional squad, the men’s competition is restricted to an under-23 tournament.

Teams must field a player roster comprised exclusively of youth team members, with three exemptions per nation. Those three players may be inpidual inpiduals, so head coaches must use their roster selections wisely.

Although in theory they can choose from any player in the national team group, in practice that is not realistic, since the Olympic Games are held shortly after the Copa América or the Euro Cup, and shortly before the start of the season. of clubs, meaning it is impossible to ask players to participate in both. Therefore, players who participate with their senior national teams in major tournaments are almost universally excluded from selection for their Olympic team.
