SUN – SEASON 3: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?TO
Opening shot: Season 2 of Sun made fun of it, and season 3 of the series returns to it: the chaotic moment when Pedro “Dom” Dantas (Leone), wounded and cornered, throws a live grenade at a police checkpoint and jumps from a highway overpass. the highway in a desperate attempt to escape.
The essence: “Loosely inspired by true events,” reads the disclaimer at the beginning of the novel. Sunbut in Brazil, the exploits of its main character are a well-known part of popular culture and criminal lore. Since this is the final season of the drama, it should return to that time in 2005, when Dom made his last stand. But before that happens, and following the established format of the series, there are flashbacks within flashbacks.
After spending most of the second season in prison, Dom now stays in Rocinha, the steep Rio de Janeiro favela overlooking the ocean. And while he longs to reunite with his true love Jasmin (Raquel Villar) and meet his young daughter, his criminal lifestyle makes that exponentially more difficult. Basically, the police watch his every move. But Jasmin has also said that she doesn’t want her daughter to grow up in a life of crime. Even as he commits more robberies and continues to use cocaine in massive quantities, Dom knows that the birth of his daughter has awakened something inside him. Fatherhood is something to live for, rather than his normal mode, which has always been interpreted as fatalism.
Dom’s father, Victor (Tolezani), knows something about that, too. He was once a decorated officer in the police anti-drug squad. Disillusioned by rampant corruption within the ranks of law enforcement and vilified for being the cop father of one of Brazil’s most wanted, Victor now lives in hope of finally saving his son from his worst impulses. (Another flashback shows Victor in 1981, the day Dom was born, the image of a proud father with no idea of what was to come.) Victor also meets a woman, Lia (Aline Borges). They drink, dance and vibe together. It really could be the start of something great. But a tense meeting with his doctor establishes a new set of priorities. “When death is near, everything changes. You immediately think of all the things worth fighting for.”
In the short term, Dom discovers that Colibri’s (Murilo Sampaio) demands do not stop with the payment of a debt. The boastful drug dealer and boss of the Rocinha favela, who provides him protection while he carries out a series of robberies and brazen home invasions, doesn’t want to lose the ill-gotten gains brought to his door by the guy he The city’s media have described him as “Pedro Dom, the most feared thief in Rio.”

Leave and go where? Like Home It enters its last stage, its protagonist shouts “I am a father!” to heaven, but he can’t get through to the woman he claims to love on her flip phone. He wants to earn enough money to take care of Jasmin and her daughter, but he is always in a vicious cycle. Frustrated with what his life has become, he exhales destructive amounts. Determined to free himself from the favela and Colibrí’s control, he commits increasingly dangerous robberies. And although the love of his father Víctor is there, Pedro Dom does not accept it. He is running away from everything in his life, but he has nowhere to go. Home Getting from here to that big, dangerous showdown with grenades and police is key, because their own actions have ensured that their available options are dwindling. Fast.
Sex and skin: Nothing in the first episode. But Kelly (Polliana Aleixo), who Colibri calls her “first lady,” seems to be making a pass at Dom, which is probably a dangerous idea for both of them.
Parting shot: “For me, luck is cheating death.” Victor’s voiceover has appeared in the final moments of Homeand he’s thinking about time running out as he coughs up blood.
Sleeping star: As Pedro “Dom” Dantas, series star Gabriel Leone is all brooding consternation, interspersed with moments of sharp action. But as Dom’s father, it is Flávio Tolezani who offers a deeper performance. Playing Victor across two time periods, Tolezani balances Victor’s own impetuosity with the touching patience of lived experience and, with the stakes of Season 3, a palpable regret.
Most pilot line: —And your safety? Who pays? This protection I gave you all this time? The bribes? The hut? And there’s the kicker, right? You take a shitty bath. You think everything here is free, playboy? Dom paid his debt to Colibri. But the drug boss isn’t going to just let him go.
Our call: PASS IT ON. Home The series has been announcing its outcome since at least the beginning of its second season, and with this eight-episode finale, the final account of one of Brazil’s most notorious criminals is upon us. Everyone is behind Pedro Dom. But his biggest enemy is himself.
