It looks like point guard Klay Thompson’s long tenure with the Golden State Warriors could be coming to an end.
The sharpshooter is rumored to be a target for numerous championship contenders as an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The Dallas Mavericks are the latest team to enter the mix, as the two sides are expressing mutual interest. according to journalist Marc Stein.
“The latest evidence of that: amid a growing league-wide belief that Thompson’s relationship with the Golden State Warriors is irretrievable,” Stein wrote. “Strong mutual interest is expected between Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks when free agency opens Sunday night, league sources told The Stein Line.”
The Mavs made it to the NBA Finals last season, where they fell short against the dominant Boston Celtics, but it’s clear they’re not far behind. While many consider Thompson to be finished, it’s hard to deny that he has completely lost his touch. He averaged 17.9 points on 38.7% shooting from three-point range in 77 games last year.
The expected approach for Dallas would be to play Thompson at small forward alongside the superstar tandem of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.
