Georgia, one of the underdogs at Euro 2024, face an extremely tough last-16 test when they take on Spain in Cologne on Sunday.
Spain have arguably been the brightest team at this summer’s tournament, dominating Group B with three wins from three thanks to five goals scored, without conceding a single one at the other end.
Even though coach Luis de la Fuente made radical changes in the group finale against Albania, they managed a 1-0 victory and controlled most of the match.
It will be a huge challenge for Georgia, who surprised Portugal in the group final to qualify for the round of 16. They impressed throughout Group F, including in an opening match loss to Turkey, when they were beaten by a pair of absolute stunners from their opponents.
It could be another busy day for Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is gaining global recognition for a fantastic summer tournament following his exceptional season at Valencia.

Spain will consider themselves good because of the hugely lopsided odds in their favour, but it will be a tough test for them against a very strong and organised opponent.
La Roja have been a great team to watch, having gained notoriety for shedding their old “tiki-taka” identity to embrace a more exciting style. That will test an impressive Georgia side, and if they can resist Georgia’s tendency to score early goals and not take advantage of them, Spain will be primed to brush them aside and advance to the quarter-finals – but only if they resist underestimating the impressive Euro debutants.
