Coming into the draft, Jamal Shead was expected to be one of the most NBA-ready players in the second round. And that was exactly the case, as the Raptors selected him 45th overall.
Shead doesn’t have the star potential of a lottery pick, but the 21-year-old guard has proven to be a winner in his four years in Houston. He knows how to play at a high level and that will carry over to the NBA. He was a fan favorite in college because of his drive, defensive intensity, leadership and excellent playmaking ability. He should quickly win the hearts of Raptors fans as well.

The first place anyone should start with Shead is his elite defense. He was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year this season and was a finalist for the 2024 Naismith DPOY.
Shead is a tenacious ball-blocking defender. It’s a big reason why Houston has the second-best defense in the country. by KenPomHe harasses players, sticking to them like glue. Timing when jumping to deflect passes. He could be the best in the world.
Those types of small plays also exemplify why Shead is so good as a help defender. He has great instincts, which are needed in Houston’s hyper-aggressive defense that requires a lot of rotations. He lowers them all, managing to look as if he is in two places at once.

Shead doesn’t pack as much of a punch on offense, but he has some useful skills there, too. He’s strong for his size and has a soft touch around the rim. He’s a good passer and an unselfish point guard who makes it easy for teammates to get the ball out with ease after drives.
Shead has a good rebound for a player his size. He had three dunks on the season and collected his fourth in style during the NCAA Tournament.

He’s not afraid of big moments, as he demonstrated with a big drive to help Houston beat Texas A&M in overtime of the round of 32.
Jamal Shead Weaknesses
It’s hard for a player of Shead’s size to have that much of an impact on defense in the NBA. Players like Jose Alvarado and Jevon Carter have made their mark, but there aren’t many players who fit that archetype in the league.
Shead has a good frame at 200 pounds. If he just had a couple more inches like Marcus Smart at 6-3 with a 6-9 wingspan, it would be a lot easier to envision a path to success. Despite his great strength, he probably won’t be able to change more than one or two positions.
Shead’s offensive role is also a concern. Smaller defensive guards need to be able to stretch the floor. Is his jumper strong enough? He’s a career 29.6 percent 3-point shooter over four years in Houston, and he didn’t improve at all between his junior and senior years.

Beverley is a 1.88 meter point guard who is still in top shape in his twelfth year of his career. He has survived in the NBA by harassing players for 90 feet, energizing his teams and knocking down the occasional scoreless 3-pointer.
That shot allowed Beverley to start games for playoff teams during the prime of his career. As he lost strength, he became less playable. It will be vital for Shead to hit shots that are completely open to him.
Shead is a better passer, playmaker and scorer than Beverley. They are similar types of elite defenders. Beverley has made three All-Defensive teams in his career. Shead could reach that level one day.
