Two of the most impactful fighters with colorful personalities are set to fight each other for the first time since 2019. However, this time, Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal will trade the MMA gloves and the cage for boxing gloves and the ring.
Diaz and Masvidal will meet in a ten-round bout at 175 pounds. The fight is presented by Fanmio PPV, which appropriately promoted Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul in 2021. The fight was originally scheduled for June 1, but was moved to July 6.
Diaz made his MMA debut in 2004 and competed for the WEC and Strikeforce. He joined the UFC in 2007 and won The Ultimate Fighter 5 lightweight tournament. He went 16-11 in the UFC over 27 bouts, competing in wars against some of the best fighters around. Diaz became a household name in 2016 thanks to his rivalry with Conor McGregor, with whom he won 1-1.
After that series, Diaz fought whenever he wanted. He competed in 2019 against Anthony Pettis and Masvidal, Leon Edwards in 2021 and Tony Ferguson in 2022. Diaz last fought in a boxing match against Jake Paul in August 2023, losing to “The Problem Child” but forcing the YouTuber to expend his energy.
Masvidal made his MMA debut in 2003. After competing for promotions such as AFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, and World Victory Road, “Gamebred” made his UFC debut in 2013. He compiled a 12-10 record for the promotion. His win against Ben Askren was the fastest knockout in UFC history.
The 39-year-old finished his MMA career with four straight losses. He lost to Kamaru Usman in multiple UFC welterweight title fights. Masvidal then faced rival Colby Covington before Gilbert Burns beat him in a one-sided duel in Miami, where he received a standing ovation from all of his fans.
The fight against Masvidal was for the BMF title, which Diaz lost by TKO in a fight that Masvidal controlled in the second half. Diaz is looking to get back to winning ways, this time under boxing rules.
“Nate is a dead man walking,” Masvidal said. “I can’t wait to prove that last time wasn’t a fluke. The referee saved him. We’re boxing now, which he says is his forte, but he has no chance of beating me. I’m not going to give him an inch in that ring to breathe. If he thought our MMA fight was bad, this is going to be a lot worse.”
“I’m going to choke him out. I want to put to rest any rumors about him and I being equals, or that the referee saved the day. All that talk ends on June 1. Violence and hand throwing are in our blood, but as I’ve proven before, I’m a far superior athlete and a meaner fighter. When June 1 comes, I’ll put aside all unanswered questions and live for the world to see.”
