American soccer is enjoying a golden generation of talent as the United States develops talent both domestically and internationally on a scale and level never before seen in USMNT history.
However, no one expected the United States to field a player with as much hype as 14-year-old Cavan Sullivan. Now, it appears that hype has become tangible, as a player whose accolades seem to extend far beyond his youth is on track to move to Europe.
Sullivan, who comes from a wealthy football family and began his youth career with the Philadelphia Union, has put himself on the world map at an absurdly young age.
The US youth international has been tipped for a future move to European giants Manchester City, but will have to wait several years for that move to become a reality.
Although he is still many years away from playing for the first team of a Champions League club, Sullivan and his family have sought to give him the best opportunity to develop and become the player many believe he can be.

Who is American teen star Cavan Sullivan?
Sullivan is originally from North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and moved to Norristown at a young age. That proximity allowed him to join the Philadelphia Union academy in 2020, which trains in nearby Wayne, Pennsylvania, alongside his older brother Quinn, a 20-year-old U.S. youth international who graduated from the Union academy and now plays for the club’s first team.
Sullivan has earned praise from coaches and scouts around the world. In April 2023, when Sullivan was just 13 years old, the Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtain said that the young man “has the ability and talent to become, quite simply, a household name.” But others go even further.
Former US international and current ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman said Manchester City scouts told him they believe Sullivan is “the best 14-year-old in the world” before adding his own comment that “they’re not wrong”.
Sullivan now plays for the U.S. under-15 team. Winning the Ballon d’Or Player of the Year award at the 2023 CONCACAF Under-15 Championship, which the United States won by beating Mexico 4-2 in the final. He scored three goals in the tournament, all in the group stage, before helping the U.S. dominate possession in the knockout stages.
Philadelphia football runs in the family blood. Sullivan’s parents, Brendan and Heike, both played college football at the University of Pennsylvania, and his grandfather Larry played at Temple before becoming the coach at Villanova for 16 years, during which time he coached current Union boss Jim Curtin.
Cavan Sullivan signs for Manchester City ahead of other big European clubs
According to several reports, since Fabricius Romano, Tom Bogert of The Athletic and Philipp Kessler of the Daily Mail Among others, Cavan Sullivan has signed for Premier League giants Manchester City, following a long list of other clubs who have shown interest in signing him. However, that signing is reportedly not going to materialise for some time.
The list of clubs that have approached him is extensive and impressive. Sullivan has been linked with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund for a while due to a number of factors, but not just BVB. Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are among the clubs that have made approaches, according to Romano and Kessler.

It’s worth noting that Sullivan is signing with a Premier League club for one reason in particular: Sullivan has a German passport, which, due to European child labor laws, would allow him to play for any club in a European Union nation at age 16. Because of Brexit, he would only be able to play for English clubs at age 18.
Manchester City will therefore have convinced Sullivan and his representatives that their compensation and plan for his development will compensate for his inability to play for his parent club’s first team for two more years.
Initially, Kessler and Bogert reported that the plan would be for Manchester City to loan Sullivan to Belgian club Lommel SK of the City Football Group once he turned 16. However, it appears that Sullivan will remain in the United States to continue his development until he is old enough to move to England has been ruled out.
Cavan Sullivan to stay at Philadelphia Union before moving to City
While it always seemed likely that Cavan Sullivan would eventually move to Europe, the Philadelphia Union seemed destined to see the young American prodigy depart earlier than anticipated.
Initial report of Tom Bogert Belgium’s football players’ union stated that the union had made Sullivan a massive offer that would have been the “best offer to a youth player” ever presented in Major League Soccer. However, that offer initially failed to meet expectations, and Sullivan looked set to make the move imminently, with a loan to City Football Group affiliate SK Lommel in Belgium until he was eligible to play in England.
Sullivan then made a 180-degree turn and the latest reports indicate that he will stay and develop with the MLS club for the foreseeable future, likely until he turns 18, when he will be eligible to move to Manchester City.
According to updated reports from Bogert at the end of March 2024Sullivan has agreed to terms with the Union and Manchester City to continue his development with the MLS club, thanks in part to the largest contract for a youth player in league history. Once signed, Sullivan would be eligible to play for the Union’s first team, having made his first appearance for the club’s reserve team days earlier, recording a debut assist as a substitute.
Bogert’s report claims that under the deal, Sullivan will transfer to Manchester City once he turns 18. The clubs have reportedly agreed a transfer package that includes a long list of add-ons plus a sale percentage of unconfirmed size retained by the Union.
The murkiest part of the deal is a vague clause buried in Bogert’s report that reads: “The Union have agreed with City that they would send Sullivan to a City Football Group team elsewhere in Europe if his development outpaces MLS before he turns 18, sources say.” The notion of Sullivan’s development “outpacing MLS” would be hugely open to interpretation and could lead to a potential clash between the clubs if a disagreement arises over his development progress.
While there are no previous figures on local agreements, Jonathan Tannenwald of the Philadelphia Inquirer According to reports (particularly before it was revealed that Sullivan would be staying with the Union), it would surpass the deal believed to be the largest in homegrown player history, that of the New York Red Bulls, who signed then-15-year-old Julian Hall last year. MLS salary figures indicate that Hall earned $167,685 in the first year of his contract. We’ll eventually find out what Sullivan’s current salary figure is once MLS’s updated earnings for 2024 are released, but that number wouldn’t give the future value of the remaining years of the deal, just the current value.
Sullivan scored his first professional goal on July 6, 2024, playing for the Philadelphia Union’s reserve team, which plays in MLS NEXT Pro. Will Cavan Sullivan play for the United States or Germany?
Cavan Sullivan has been playing for the United States at the youth level, but there is no guarantee he will play for the USMNT when he eventually becomes an option for the U.S. national team.
The young man’s German passport through his mother’s ancestry means there may come a time when he has to choose between the United States or Germany.
While A report by Philipp Klesser from the German publication Tz He says Sullivan “feels fully American” and that “it will be very difficult for Germany to change his mind,” and notes that the German national team has closely followed Sullivan several times, indicating that he is on their radar.
The only other notable occasion when an American-born player chose to play for a major European nation was in 2008, when Guiseppe Rossi made his infamous debut for the Italian national team.
However, Rossi spent his entire youth career playing for the Italian national team at the youth level, which likely pushed him in that direction. It would be unprecedented if Sullivan had spent his first 14 years living in the United States while playing for the American youth system, but ultimately decided to represent another major European nation at the senior level.
