Gregg Berhalter was in a tough spot — at least in the collective minds of fans — heading into the 2024 Copa America.
The U.S. men’s national team needed a strong showing in the tournament to cement its position as head coach heading into the 2026 World Cup. Instead, the U.S. men’s national team was eliminated in the group stage after losses to Panama and Uruguay.
The early elimination leaves Berhalter’s future with the national team more uncertain than ever.
Still, the U.S. Soccer Federation is taking some time to consider its decision. Officials are likely weighing the impact of parting ways with Berhalter and what kind of replacement they could find for the solid coach.
So while a change may seem necessary to some, there is no guarantee that Berhalter will be looking for work anytime soon.

Gregg Berhalter’s coaching history
Berhalter has posted a record of 44 wins, 13 draws and 17 losses in 74 games with the U.S. men’s national team. His 44 wins are the third-most by a U.S. men’s national team coach of all time, behind Bruce Arena (81) and Jurgen Klinsmann (55).
Berhalter helped lead the United States back to the World Cup in 2022 after the country surprisingly missed out on the tournament in 2018. The team performed well in CONCACAF competition and improved from 25th in the world at the time of Berhalter’s takeover to 11th in FIFA’s most recent rankings.
Still, the U.S. national team hasn’t closed the gap on other world powers despite boasting one of its most talented rosters in recent history. That, coupled with an exit before the knockout rounds of the 2024 Copa America, could be enough to doom Berhalter.
Gregg Berhalter’s coaching history
Berhalter had eight years of coaching experience before joining the U.S. national team. He started out at Hammarby in the Swedish League from 2011-2013 before becoming the head coach of the Columbus Crew for the 2013 MLS season.
Berhalter remained with the Crew until 2018, when he was named head coach of the USMNT.
