The Netherlands and England will be hoping to end decades of suffering at major tournaments when they meet in the second semi-final of Euro 2024.
Ronald Koeman was at his peak as a player when the Dutch won Euro 1988, a success that remains his last despite the many excellent generations of Oranje players that have come since.
England infamously have to go back even further, to the 1966 World Cup, but Gareth Southgate’s side are knocking on the door again after reaching their third semi-final in six years.

England vs Netherlands live updates, Euro 2024 highlights
1 hour and 5 minutes before the start: There are no surprises from Koeman either. Donyell Malen’s impressive performance off the bench has earned him a starting place on the right side of the front three, where he will be supported by Denzel Dumfries, who comes in at right-back.

1 hour and 10 minutes before the start:The England squad is here and it’s as expected. Guehi comes on for Konsa and Trippier keeps his place ahead of Shaw.
1 hour and 20 minutes before the start:England’s players stroll around the Signal Iduna Park pitch. Declan Rice is the centre of attention with a beaming smile and does not look like a man who is just over an hour away from one of the biggest games of his life. We will have confirmed news on the squad shortly. Marc Guehi, who will replace Ezri Konsa, is expected to be Southgate’s only change as the Crystal Palace man returns from suspension. That would mean Kieran Trippier would be left on the left flank despite Luke Shaw impressing from the bench against Switzerland. It was the Manchester United left-back’s first appearance in five months.

1 hour and 40 minutes before the start:During the 2019 win for the Dutch, Frenkie de Jong was superb, producing the kind of defining midfield performance that has so often proved to be England’s Achilles’ heel on these occasions, a year after Luka Modric in Moscow and two years before Marco Verratti at Wembley. De Jong’s injury absence could prove hugely important tonight, especially if England’s midfield ‘box’ of Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham can build on some of their promising work against Switzerland in the previous round. It may not be exciting too often, but Southgate has sought to build a team designed to avoid the kind of defeats they suffered under De Jong in Guimaraes.

2 hours before the start:A previous meeting of far greater relevance in terms of this game came in 2019 at a rain-swept Guimaraes. Holland, during Koeman’s first term in office, beat Southgate’s England 3-1 after extra time in the semi-finals of the inaugural UEFA Nations League. Marcus Rashford put the Three Lions ahead with a first-half penalty but, in a setback emblematic of most setbacks in Southgate’s successful reign, they were denied, lost control of the game and conceded Matthijs de Ligt’s equaliser. Woeful defending in extra time led to a Quincy Promes double for the Oranje.
2 hours and 20 minutes before the start:The last time these two sides met at a major tournament, hosts England ran out 4-1 winners in the Euro 96 group stages at Wembley, a performance still remembered as one of the Three Lions’ finest. Gareth Southgate played in defence for Terry Venables’ England that night and told the BBC this week that he did not remember the 90 minutes as fondly as some of his former team-mates as he “spent the night chasing Dennis Bergkamp”. A repeat performance from his side tonight would undoubtedly be Southgate’s finest hour.
1996 – Tonight will be the first meeting between England and the Netherlands at a major tournament since the Three Lions won 4-1 at EURO 96 at Wembley, a match in which Gareth Southgate played. Memories. photo.twitter.com/5syKtiztga

2 hours and 40 minutes before the startSpeaking of pain, Dutch manager Ronald Koeman holds a special place in the complex beast that is the English football psyche. In a crucial World Cup qualifier in October 1993, Koeman should have been sent off for a professional foul on David Platt in Rotterdam. He wasn’t and he opened the scoring with a brilliant free-kick moments later. The Netherlands won 2-0 and qualified for the 1994 World Cup in the United States. England did not.

England vs. Netherlands lineups, team news and starting XI
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has kept the same starting lineup for his side’s two knockout games so far, but a change could be on the horizon.
Steven Bergwijn He has not performed well on the right wing and his place is threatened by Donyell Malenwho scored two quick goals in the round of 16 against Romania. Jeremie Frimpongwho usually plays as a right-back for Bayer Leverkusen, is another possible option.
With the sensation of RB Leipzig Xavi Simons supporting behind Memphis Depay and the one from Liverpool Cody Gakpo Posing a serious threat down the left flank, scoring three goals in their five appearances at Euro 2024, the Dutch have deployed a fairly fluid 4-2-3-1 formation. What is Weghorst? would be the option chosen from the bench.
Predicted starting lineup for the Netherlands (4-3-3): Verbruggen (GK): Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake; Schouten, Simons, Reijnders; Malen, Depay, Gakpo.
Subs from Holland (maximum 15): The list of players called up for the match is published one hour before the start.
For England, Lucas Shaw made his long-awaited return from injury by coming on in the second half of the quarter-final match against Switzerland and is fit to replace Kieran Trippier On the left flank.
Harry Kane He was forced off in extra time on Sunday with an injury sustained during the match and has not been at his best despite scoring twice at Euro 2024. However, doing without his captain would be a major decision that Gareth Southgate seems highly unlikely to accept.
The Three Lions will also welcome back Marc Guehi from his one-match suspension, although Ezri Konsa Shocked by his absence last time.
England’s projected starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Pickford (GK)-Walker, Stones, Guehi-Saka, Mainoo, Rice, Trippier-Foden, Bellingham-Kane.
England substitutes (maximum 15): The list of players called up for the match is published one hour before the start.
