Jaron Ennis is ready for a homecoming to remember when the Philadelphia native defends the IBF welterweight title against David Avanesyan at the Wells Fargo Center.
Ennis, a two-time Golden Gloves medalist, held the IBF interim title in early 2023. “Boots” was named full-time champion after Terence Crawford was stripped of the belt, just months after beating Errol Spence Jr. to become undisputed welterweight champion. It is his third overall defense of the IBF title.
Avanesyan held interim WBA, NABF and European welterweight gold and twice fell short in his bid for world gold. The Russian-born fighter bounced back in December after a loss to Crawford for the WBO welterweight title.
Avanesyan, ranked 13th in the IBF rankings, replaced Cody Crowley, who had to undergo eye surgery. Ennis doesn’t seem to care about the change or what the odds say, as he believes Avanesyan is an upgrade.
“Now that Crowley is officially no longer my opponent, I actually like Avanesyan more,” Ennis said. “He’s going to put up a better fight, which is what I want. On July 13, don’t miss this beautiful and outstanding performance!”
