England will face Spain in the Euro 2024 final as they bid to end a 58-year wait for a major trophy in senior men’s international football.

England and Spain have met 27 times since their first meeting in 1929. That includes two games at the UEFA European Championship and two at the FIFA World Cup.

Legendary Spanish striker Telmo Zarra scored the winning goal in the first competitive meeting between the two teams at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, when Spain sealed a 1-0 victory.
England got their revenge in 1968, when they won home and away to deny Spain a place in that summer’s European Championship, but the Three Lions finished third in a four-team tournament.
In the 1980s the rivalry increased, but despite England beating La Roja 2-1 in the group stages of Euro 80, both teams were eliminated at the first hurdle.
At the 1982 World Cup in Spain, the hosts drew 0–0 with England in the second group stage in Madrid, as both teams failed to reach the semi-finals.
However, the most memorable recent encounter came in the Euro 96 quarter-finals, when hosts England won a penalty shoot-out against Spain at Wembley after a goalless draw.

Considering they lost to Germany on penalties in the next round, when Southgate infamously missed the key spot-kick, that win over Spain was England’s only shoot-out victory between 1990 and 2018.
Under Southgate’s leadership, England have won one of their three meetings with Spain, including the most recent: a 3-2 UEFA Nations League victory in October 2018.
