Who are the favorites for the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year?
To no one’s surprise, the Wizards’ second overall pick Alex Sarr (+700) and the Hawks’ first overall pick Zaccharie Risacher (+800) has two of the three shortest odds to win Rookie of the Year.
San Antonio’s #4 Pick Stephan’s Castle (+1000) and the Lakers’ steal at No. 17, Dalton Knecht (+900) They also remain in the top five.
The Grizzlies Zach Edey (+600) has been the biggest riser, shooting up from +1000 on June 27 (the sixth shortest on the board) to become the longest-odds favorite.
Who are the most unlikely players who could win Rookie of the Year?
With the big guy from UConn Donovan Clingan (+1800) Upon landing in Portland, he is expected to have a major role from day one of his NBA career. He is an elite rim protector and strong interior scorer, and it is possible that he will win this award simply by producing a series of double-doubles and staying healthy for an entire season.
If Portland trades DeAndre Ayton or Robert Williams (or if either of them gets injured), Clingan could end up having an impact similar to what Dereck Lively had in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. That’s not to say the Blazers will make the postseason, but Rookie of the Year Award winners rarely make the playoffs anyway.
The Timberwolves acquired the rights to Terrence Shannon Jr. (+8000) from San Antonio for next to nothing (two draft picks in the early 2030s), and they may have gotten the steal of the draft in the process.
Previously considered a top lottery pick, Shannon’s stock fell after the 2023 sexual assault charges that were ultimately cleared. He has the all-around talent to immediately inherit a solid rotation role with Minnesota.
What are the odds of Bronny James winning Rookie of the Year?
Since the smoke cleared after the Lakers selected him to play alongside his father LeBron, James Tan has been listed at +25000 on the MGM bet ROY odds chart. Bronny initially opened at +15000 after being selected by the Lakers at #55, but has since risen to have the longest odds on the board.
Under normal circumstances, this might be considered a value betting opportunity, but given the development Bronny will likely need before assuming a role as an X-factor or game-changer, even a lottery ticket bet seems ill-advised. Interesting storylines don’t always equate to good betting opportunities.
