The In-Season tournament returns for the 2024-25 NBA season with a new look.
While last year’s edition was simply called the In-Season Tournament, this year’s edition has been dubbed the Emirates NBA Cup. To complete the revamp, the tournament also has a new logo.
Led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers defeated the Pacers to claim the league’s inaugural NBA Cup title. While we’ll have to wait until December to see if Los Angeles can defend its crown, we’ll be one step closer to knowing each team’s path to the championship when the groups are revealed on July 12.

The most recent collective bargaining agreement Includes an explanation of the NBA Cup format:
- The NBA Cup is divided into two phases: the group stage and the knockout stage.
- All 30 teams participate in the group stage and each team plays a total of four group stage matches.
- There will be six groups in total in the group stage (three per conference). Each group will have five teams and those teams will be seeded into groups by random draws.
- The six group stage winners will advance to the knockout stage. The two wild card teams (one per conference) that had the highest winning percentages but finished second in the group standings will also advance to the knockout stage.
- Each knockout stage game will be an elimination game, meaning the winners will advance to the next round and the losers will be eliminated from the NBA Cup.
- The semifinal and championship games will be played at a neutral venue. All NBA Cup games, except the championship game, will be considered regular season games.
