Marcus Rashford, Casemiro and Mason Mount all returned to action but 20-year-old goalkeeper Radek Vitek was the star of Manchester United’s first pre-season friendly at Rosenborg, which ended in a 1-0 defeat.

Rashford and Casemiro have been left out of England and Brazil’s respective squads for Euro 2024 and Copa America after poor inpidual seasons in 2023/24.

Mount has not played for England since the 2022 World Cup and his debut campaign at Old Trafford turned into an injury nightmare.

The trio went off amid a flurry of changes at half-time, long before Noah Holm fired home deep into added time to give the hosts a deserved win after hitting the post or crossbar four times.

Former Chelsea midfielder Mount won possession high up the pitch to create United’s best chance of the first half for Ethan Wheatley six minutes before the interval, but it was Rosenborg who did most of the running and would have had a comfortable victory were it not for the presence of Vitek and his goal-frame.

Alfred Johansson’s side are in the midst of Norway’s Eliteserien 2024 season and their expected superiority in terms of fitness and playing acumen was evident throughout.

Ole Saeter had an early goal ruled out for offside, while Casemiro’s first notable involvement was a foul on Toma Nemcik with his backheels, which might have been punished more severely than a yellow card had this been a competitive game.

Marius Broholm was booked for a foul on Rashford, who was on the edge of the area. The striker found himself at the centre of the attack when a ball hit the post, but Vitek saved it sharply. At the end of this last attack, the United goalkeeper showed a very sharp reaction when Will Fish almost put an own goal in.

Broholm came close to scoring again after a nice passing move, but his ball crashed against the crossbar before Vitek denied Sverre Nypan.

Vitek had 10 new outfield players in front of him in the second half, but that did little to change the course of the game, with Emil Frederiksen coming into action to torment United down the left flank. The winger nutmegged Chris Armas and into the side-netting, while also crashing in off the base of the near post from an equally tight angle.

On both occasions a cross would have been a better option, but Frederiksen’s composure failed him again five minutes from time when he headed past Vitek from close range.

The Czech goalkeeper and his crossbar combined to make his best save of the match, denying Tobias Borkeeiet a header from Adam Anderson. Ethan Ennis’ powerful 25-yard shot was the closest United came after the break.

In truth, Erik ten Hag and new assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy had little to enjoy in the way of their overall play, but the minutes on the legs were the most of a day that ended with a moment to savour for the 23-year-old Holm.
