High school Season 21 returned on Monday, July 29 with another eventful episode, but before Jenn Tran and her 12 remaining men went on their date in New Zealand, franchise host Jesse Palmer dropped a hilarious bombshell.
If you’re a longtime member of Bachelor Nation, you might remember that the 45-year-old former professional football player led The Bachelor’The fifth season of this show was produced years before I started hosting it. If you’ve been watching the show for a while, you’ll also know that often when the leads and contestants go on dates, they sit down in front of delicious-looking meals and famously do NOT eat in front of the cameras.
What newer fans of the franchise may not know is that these shows didn’t always work this way…
Over the years, several former players from the franchise have attempted to explain the confusing rule to viewers. In 2014, former Bachelor Star Sean Lowe explained“…It doesn’t make for entertaining television. Not to mention that the plates of food have usually been there for a long time before we sit down. No one likes cold steak. Plus, the microphones pick up the chewing sounds and it’s pretty unpleasant to listen to. So, we usually ate alone in the hotel room before the date so we wouldn’t starve later.” In 2021, the former Bachelorette party lead Tayshia Adams told Delish“It’s usually because there are cameras and microphones and all that and it would be kind of hard to get sound bites while you’re chewing and eating. We usually eatbeforeThe dates. Sometimes food looks so good that you want to try it, so that has definitely happened.”
During a meal with Tran in High school Season 21, Episode 4, Palmer continued to talk about (and even take blame for) the rule between bites at Depot Eatery in Auckland, New Zealand.
As the two gamely dined in front of the camera, Palmer said, “I have an interesting anecdote for you. Do you ever wonder why you’re not supposed to eat when you’re on a date alone?” Tran guessed the obvious and said, “Eating isn’t attractive? I don’t know.” She’s right, but apparently the reasoning goes a little deeper…

Palmer pointed to himself, reminding Tran that he was… The BachelorThe star of ‘s fifth season. As clips of Pallmer on dinner dates from her season appeared in the corner of the screen, she explained, “On my season, I would wolf down my food on every single date and try to have these serious conversations, literally talking while I was eating. And I think after that they had to stop doing that… So I basically ruined it for everybody.” Hilariously.
based on Palmer’s love for KFCIt’s easy to believe that he In fact Palmer got into food on dates, and after seeing some of the meals that were served during his season, we don’t blame him! Palmer and Tran proved that good conversation and good food can co-exist, so why not bring back food on dates? Do you go on dates from time to time? People deserve to have dinner together before they get engaged!
