In the world of sports, there is an exclusive list of athletes who are prominent enough to be known by a single name. Lakers superstar LeBron James is one of them.
James, who has been in the public eye for more than two decades, is one of the biggest stars the sports world has ever seen. And if you mention James by his first name or one of his various nicknames, everyone will immediately know who you are referring to.
Even as he prepares for his 22nd NBA season, James continues to acquire new nicknames, with “Captain LeMerica” joining the four-time champion’s official list of nicknames.

LeBron James’ nicknames, explained
Using Basketball Reference as a guide, James has nine official nicknames: King James, LBJ, Chosen One, Bron-Bron, The Little Emperor, The Akron Hammer, L-Train, Benjamin Buckets, and Captain LeMerica.
The nicknames LBJ and Bron-Bron are self-explanatory, as they are derived from his initials and given name, but others have origins that need explaining.
King James
As legend has it, the King James nickname dates back to James’ freshman year of high school. After participating in St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Ohio state championship in 2000, James’ childhood friend Randy Mims said he started hearing people say “King James” about LeBron.

The name has stuck and is James’ social media handle. It also appears prominently on his Nike clothing and sneaker line.
Chosen one
James’ nickname, “The Chosen One,” was adopted after appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine in February 2002. At just 17 years old, James’ magazine cover read “The Chosen One” along with the caption that read, “High school senior LeBron James would be an NBA lottery pick right now.”
He has lived up to his nickname and embraced it, especially by getting “Chosen One” tattooed on his back.
L train
It’s unclear when it started, but James’ L-Train nickname can be attributed to Cavaliers legend and color analyst Austin Carr. Carr, who brings a unique energy to Cavs broadcasts, called James L-Train during his most impressive moments during both stints in Cleveland.
Captain LeMerica
James’ Captain LeMerica nickname is his newest and comes from his purported influence in developing the U.S. men’s basketball roster for the 2024 Olympics.
After Team USA fell short at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, James was one of the first to commit to playing in the Olympics and several other former MVPs followed soon after. LeMerica, a pun on the Marvel superhero, is derived from the spelling of LeBron’s first name.
The Little Emperor
If you look for a parallel to James’ other real nickname, there is one. However, this nickname is not so straightforward.
As Explained by East Asian historian Nick Kapur In 2018, The Little Emperor is a pun on King James’ nickname and was primarily used by his fans during the early stages of his career.
However, given some of the nickname’s connotations, his detractors tend to use The Little Emperor, while his fans prefer a more direct translation of King James.
