It takes a special man to go from first impression winner to worst impression winner in the span of six weeks. The single womanand that man’s name is Sam McKinney.
Much to the delight of Bachelor Nation, which named the 27-year-old contractor from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the Season 21 villain after Episode 3, Jenn Tran said goodbye to Sam M. in Episode 6, after a truly mortifying run. The man waved red flags all season long, but in my decade-plus of watching this franchise I can’t recall another episode that had me gasping, screaming, and yelling “What?!” at my TV screen as often as I did during Sam M.’s Episode 6 train disaster.
The elimination also meant that the first impression rose winner wouldn’t get a hometown date, but that didn’t stop Sam M.’s family from entering the contest. Bachelorette party Chat. According to the franchise’s famous spoiler, Reality Steve, The contestant’s family members have been speaking out for weeks about his negative portrayal on the show.And although the series is edited and viewers only see snippets of Jenn’s entire journey, most of the complaints surrounding Sam M. stem from her own actions, words, and clear inability to “keep the main thing the main thing.”
Before Sam M. leaves our screens for a week (assuming he returns for the Men Tell All episode), let’s take a look back at his messy evolution in Season 21 to remind ourselves how he got here.
A hopeful first impression ?
On the first night, Jenn offered Sam M. the first impression rose, gave him his first (and only) kiss, and told him she felt like there was something real between them. “I think for me, a first kiss means a lot. I have a hard time being affectionate with someone and getting to that level,” Tran told Jugo Mobile in a Zoom interview ahead of the premiere. “So I knew in the back of my head that I wasn’t going to kiss anyone unless I really felt that spark and felt that connection and felt like the relationship could get to that level that night.”
The spark felt real and Sam M. Bachelorette party The journey started off strong! His sexual chemistry with Jenn was palpable, but over time the extremely physical connection began to gross out viewers. And once Sam stopped keeping the main thing as the main thing and started feuding with Devin, his picture-perfect “Top Gun 3“The image really began to fall apart.

Following Devin and Thomas’ disagreement in Episode 2, Sam got involved, accusing Devin of being a “hypocrite” and “being here for the wrong reasons.” Instead of squashing the fight and focusing on Jenn, Sam continued to fuel hatred towards Devin, calling him an “instigator” and an “ankle-biting dog” while displaying incredible immaturity and obnoxious levels of confidence. Before Episode 3 ended, Sam M. called Devin a bully, leading producers to brand him as “needing to look up the definition of bully in a dictionary.” In Episode 4, when Sam and Devin went on one-on-one dates, the tension between the guys escalated. and Sam and Jenn reached new heights.
The Terrible, The Horrible, The Bad, The Very Bad Inpidual appointment
Did Sam M. leave their one-on-one date with a rose on his chest? Yes. But before he won Jenn’s heart at dinner by telling her that her fiancé had cheated on him, she and viewers were more than ready to say goodbye.
For their date, the two headed to the Auckland Sky Tower, the tallest building in New Zealand, where Sam challenged Jenn to confront her massive fear of heights in an incredibly callous way. When asked if she was interested in jumping off the building, Jenn politely declined, opting to take in the views from the SkyWalk instead. But Sam wasn’t having it. He ignored her concerns and confirmed that they would both jump, arguing that he wanted to push her to overcome her fears and grow. Understandably, Jenn saw his insistence and disregard for her emotions as a huge red flag and said he needed to do a better job of playing her. While the two were 630 feet above the ground, she had to physically break down in tears before he walked over, hugged her, and told her it was okay to skip the jump.
After the episode, Sam posted a comment on social media suggesting that the show was using “smoke and mirrors” to manipulate fans’ feelings towards the contestants, but during an interview on theI love to see itpodcastJenn dismissed her attempts to change the narrative. “Listen, no one can put words in your mouth,” the Season 21 star said. “As much as a TV show is edited, no one can give you a villain edit in any way, which is what some people claim. You have to own your words because no one puts words in your mouth… You are the person who is saying those things, so what I will say is that sometimes you just have to take responsibility for the things that come out of your mouth.”
“It’s really, really interesting for me to look back on that moment and process it and look at it from other points of view, and it definitely bothered me when he made the decision for us both to jump,” she continued. “I don’t want a partner that’s just going to tell me to do something and not be there for me and not support me emotionally in that way… So looking back on it was hard because it’s also like, that’s not the message I want people to see, like the little girls that look up to me, that’s not what you should allow your partner to do.”
Not in any way with words ?
Before their one-on-one dates in Episode 4, Devin told the camera that Sam M. would say four lines a day to sound serious about Jenn, but when he finally had to have a real conversation with her, he would likely backfire and reveal his identity. In the end, that’s essentially… exactly what happened.
During Episode 6’s radio station group date, Sam stammered out what should have been simple answers to simple questions. He said “aggressive” when asked to name a word he associated with “Fantasy Suite,” causing Molly Mesnick to literally gasp. He said, “I got out of the limo and I was like, ‘This girl is not my type. I thought the Bachelorette was going to be Daisy or Maria,'” when asked what his first impression of Jenn was. I mean, how can you screw up the situation? that seriously?
When the pressure became too much, the “wild” kisser reminded Jenn that physical touch is his love language and distracted her with a big smooch. And when she pressed him to go to the party later that night, he dodged her extremely valid questions by bringing out the big artillery and saying “I love you.” But the statement read like a desperate attempt to distract from his wit rather than a genuine display of affection, so Jenn pulled him aside before the rose ceremony and continued to grill him.
A “terrified” Sam tried and epically failed in his attempt to fight for a rose, admitting that words weren’t his strong suit (we see it!) and repeating his “I love you,” despite being unable to properly back up his feelings. After seeing how many opportunities this man had to redeem himself in this episode alone, it was hard to feel anything but disappointed, offended, and incredibly confused by Sam M. in the end. Jenn fired him after realizing he reminded her too much of a relationship she left behind in the past, and Bachelor Nation rejoiced.
Just as Devin predicted, Jenn saw Sam’s true colors in time, and while Bachelor Nation didn’t get to see the guys’ reaction to Sam M.’s elimination, the social media celebration delivered. Normally we’d say we expect to see a contestant eliminated in Paradise for a redemption arc, but honestly… After Sam M.’s manipulative, immature, disrespectful vibes, we’re not even sure he’d be invited.
While we may see some Season 21 “villains” doing… Paradise returns, it seems Bachelor Nation would rather Sam M. keep the main thing away from their television screens. Plus, we have a new Bachelor leads to enthusiasm, and it’s not Sam!
