Stephon Marbury is a retired 13-year NBA veteran, two-time All-NBA point guard, and a legend of the Chinese Basketball Association.

For all that Marbury is, he’s apparently not a fan of LeBron James.

Marbury, who played alongside James at the 2004 Olympics, was on the court when Team USA won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite having seen James’ MVP performance up close, Marbury has been one of the future Hall of Famer’s biggest detractors ever since.

Since Team USA won the gold medal, Marbury has been on a… social media campaign To argue that Stephen Curry was more deserving of the MVP, reclaimed James should not be “mentioned in the same context” as Michael Jordan and saying James is “not strong enough” to admit it.

What’s going on? The feud between Marbury and James may not have started at the 2004 Olympics, but the two did have a feud nearly 20 years ago. Here’s more on the history between Marbury and James and how it may have affected the current situation.

LeBron James and Stephon Marbury’s conflict explained

The feud between James and Marbury took on new life after the gold medal game. Marbury was left with Carmelo Anthony, with whom James headed straight to celebrate. After hugging Anthony, James appears to purposely ignore Marbury.

In recent years, Marbury has launched numerous criticisms of James, including his 2018 Affirmation that Zion Williamson “is so much better than LeBron, not even close… He doesn’t need to touch a basketball and he’s better than LeBron James. I said that.”

The origin of the dispute apparently It dates back to March 2007when James and Marbury engaged in a war of words over their respective sneaker sponsors.

At the time, Marbury had a groundbreaking endorsement deal with retailer Steve & Barry’s, under which his Starbury sneakers retailed for $14.98. James shared his stance on the possibility of having a discount line as he and the Cavaliers prepared to take on Marbury’s Knicks.

“Being at Nike, we have high standards,” James said. “And we do a great job of delivering great products and shoes. The price is pretty high, but at the same time you get great quality.”

James’ words got back to Marbury, who was blunt in his response, though it may not have aged well.

“I laughed,” Marbury said of James’ comments. “I’d rather own than be owned. When he retires, he won’t own anything.

“I don’t think so [James] “He did his homework,” he continued. “We’re putting out the same thing he’s putting out, just at an affordable price. But I understand he has to say that because it’s part of the business.”

Eight years after the dispute with Marbury, James signed a lifetime contract with Nike worth $1 billion. James is involved in several business ventures, including stakes in several sports franchises.

As Marbury watched from the sidelines, James debuted a gold-medal version of the No. 22 sneaker from his main line of sneakers with the brand. The feud may have started before the sneaker exchange, but time has shown that in that case, Marbury might have chosen the wrong stance to be unyielding.

What did Stephon Marbury say about LeBron James?

TheDunkCentral account posted three Marbury quotes about James, each of which generated millions of views on the social media platform. Marbury argued that Stephen Curry was more deserving of being the 2024 Olympic MVP and claimed that James should not be “mentioned in the same context” as Michael Jordan, among others.

Marbury has since responded to many of James’ fans on his personal X account, defending his views.
