Since its inaugural season in 1950, 111 different drivers have crossed the finish line to win a Formula One Grand Prix.
Among these drivers, some have enjoyed more success than others during their careers, not only achieving more race victories, but also accumulating more world championships.

Which driver has won the most races in F1 history?
Lewis Hamilton (105)
The most successful driver in F1 history is Lewis Hamilton. The Stevenage native has won 105 Grands Prix during his illustrious career and is still looking to increase that tally. No other driver has reached triple digits in terms of race wins in the history of the sport.
Hamilton is also the most decorated driver in terms of world championship titles, with seven titles won, the first coming in 2008.
Michael Schumacher (91)
The second most successful driver in F1 history is German great Michael Schumacher, with 91 victories. Alongside Hamilton, Schumacher also won seven world titles during his illustrious career, including five in a row between 2000 and 2004, as he dominated the sport with the help of his Ferrari team.
Max Verstappen (61)
The most recent F1 champion on this list, Dutch driver Max Verstappen, has 61 race wins in his career, which began in 2015.
A Red Bull driver every year, Verstappen became the 2021 world champion in controversial fashion, although he won the 2022 world title in much less dramatic fashion after dominating the rest of the field. In the 2022 season, he also set a new record of 15 wins in a single F1 season.
Sebastian Vettel (53)
By winning the drivers’ championship four times in a row between 2010 and 2013, Schumacher’s compatriot Sebastian Vettel ranks third for the most F1 race wins in history.
Vettel has previously driven for some of the sport’s biggest teams, including Red Bull and Ferrari, but after the 2022 season where he raced with Aston Martin, the decorated German has decided to retire from the sport.
Alain Prost (51)
Alain Prost is the most successful French driver in F1 history. He won 51 races during his career, the first of which came at the French Grand Prix in 1981. He also ran his own F1 team, Prost Grand Prix, between 1997 and 2001.
As a non-executive director of Renault Sport – now Alpine – until January 2022, Prost is still a regular sight at race days around the world.
Aryton Senna (41)
The late Ayrton Senna sits fifth on the all-time list of F1 race winners thanks to an illustrious career that lasted from 1985 until his untimely death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
Recognized as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport thanks to his three world championship victories in 1988, 1990 and 1991, Senna is also considered the greatest wet-weather driver of all time and is referenced as an idol to many modern drivers.
Fernando Alonso (32)
Double world champion in 2005 and 2006 with Renault, the Spaniard Fernando Alonso occupies seventh place in the all-time F1 victories list with 32 victories after being overtaken by Verstappen in 2022.
After his last race win at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2013, Alonso is still going strong at 41 and caused a surprise by qualifying second for Alpine at last season’s Canadian Grand Prix, where he eventually finished ninth. In 2022, he also became the longest-serving active F1 driver after making his debut in 2001.
Nigel Mansell (31)
Nicknamed ‘The Lion’ by Ferrari fans due to his committed and aggressive driving style, British driver Nigel Mansell managed to win 31 races during his F1 career between 1980 and 1995.
After becoming F1 World Champion in 1992, Mansell decided to pursue a career in the CART IndyCar World Series, winning that competition in 1993. He became the first rookie to win the title and the first person to be reigning F1 and US National Single-Seater Champion at the same time.
Jackie Stewart (27)
Winner of three World Drivers’ Championships, Jackie Stewart was aptly nicknamed ‘The Flying Scot’ due to his electric pace on the race track.
With 27 wins in his F1 career, Stewart also narrowly missed out on winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1966. Between 1997 and 1999 he was team principal of the Stewart Grand Prix Racing team.
Jim Clark and Niki Lauda (25)
Two motorsport legends complete the top 10. Jim Clarke and Niki Lauda both won 25 races during their respective careers.
