Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has been handed a five-match international ban and a hefty €20,000 ($22,234) fine after he was involved in a post-match brawl at the Copa America.

CONMEBOL decision and consequences
Several Uruguayan players, including Nunez, entered the stands to confront fans after the altercation that took place near the players’ families.
In the heat of the moment, Nunez was caught on camera attempting to throw a chair, an act that earned him a five-match ban from CONMEBOL, South American football’s governing body.
Nunez is not the only one facing consequences for his actions. Tottenham player Rodrigo Betancur has been suspended for four games, while Mathias Olivera, Ronald Araujo and José María Gimenez have been suspended for three games each.

The Uruguayan Football Federation was also fined €20,000 and one official, Marcelo García, was banned from CONMEBOL events for six months after he was seen throwing a water bottle during the chaos.
Despite the harsh sanctions, Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa defended his players, saying:
“The only thing I can tell you is that the players reacted like any human being would. If you saw your wife, your mother or a baby being attacked, what would you do?”
Impact on Nunez and Liverpool
While the suspension rules Nunez out of Uruguay’s next five international matches, including crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers, it does not affect his availability for Liverpool. The 24-year-old forward will continue to be a key player for the Reds as they compete in the Premier League and Champions League.
