Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has sparked a debate within the NBA community that he never expected.
Edwards didn’t pay tribute to the generations of talent that came before him, but instead credited GOAT Michael Jordan. A handful of Hall of Famers, including Magic Johnsoncame forward to criticize the Wolves goalkeeper.
Now, Philadelphia 76ers superstar Paul George joins those calling out Edwards in a recent podcast episode.
“I thought it was a lack of respect for the game.” Georges said“I found that comment very immature. Anthony Edwards is obviously very talented and he has a huge talent for the future. But we have to give credit to all those who have done it before us.”
It’s hard to say whether Edwards was simply praising Jordan or denigrating previous generations. If so, almost no one agrees with him, since most of the best players in history have come from past eras, with the exception of LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry.
Here’s Edwards’ original comment that pissed off so many people with ties to the league.
“I didn’t watch it at the time, so I can’t speak to it,” Edwards shared in an interview with the Wall Street Journal“They say it was harder back then than it is now, but I don’t think anybody had talent back then. (Michael Jordan) was the only one that had real talent, you know what I mean? That’s why when they saw Kobe (Bryant), they were like, ‘Oh, my God.’ But now, everybody’s got talent.”
It’s worth noting that the Sixers star wasn’t calling Edwards immature, but his statement. George is one of the first active players to publicly criticize Edwards for the remark, meaning his comment could be followed by many more.
