John Cena’s promo for his new movie Jackpot! left a lot to be desired, with fans calling the video “cheesy.”
2024 has been a banner year for new movie releases, thanks to films like Longlegs and Alien: Romulus. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Jackpot!, Amazon Prime Video’s new comedy starring John Cena and Awkwafina.
The action film hit the streaming service on August 15, and in an effort to promote the release, Cena took to Prime Video’s TikTok to explain the plot entirely in Generation Alpha lingo.
Needless to say, the results were not well received online. In fact, many took to the internet to criticize Cena for his use of terms like “beta,” “drip,” and “sigma.”
Despite a hint of irony and self-awareness in the video, it’s not enough to stop TikTok’s comments section from being overloaded with comments like: “John, I don’t know how much they’re paying you, but it’s not worth it.”
On X, the answer is essentially the same. A user wrote“Many say it’s the most desperate attempt to market a movie that no one will ever watch.”
“I’ve been offline all day and seeing this pop-up makes me want to be offline permanently,” said another.
Another discouraged one comment said: “I will never get that minute and two seconds back.”
“There’s no depth too low for him when he’s promoting a movie.” another said, while a comment I simply wrote: “The cheesiest music video I’ve ever seen.”
Jackpot! is set in an alternate future where the California Lottery allows people to legally hunt down and kill lottery winners to steal their winnings. Cena plays Noel, a lottery protection officer who helps Katie (Awkwafina), a woman who unknowingly wins the lottery and becomes the latest target.
