Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams is a potential trade candidate, according to Brian Windhorst. Williams was a key part of the Celtics teams that reached the 2022 NBA Finals and 2023 Eastern Conference Finals. This also comes after Portland also put its star center, Deandre Ayton, on the trade market last month.
“A guy to watch and very transferable is ‘The Time Lord,’ one of the great nicknames in the entire NBA, Robert Williams,” Windhorst said. “Coming back from injury, he’s obviously a guy who’s had injury issues, but he’s making $13 million. They could be willing to part ways with him, and he could go to a contender and be a big piece if he’s healthy.”
Last season, Williams averaged nearly seven points, six rebounds, nearly an assist, a block and a steal per game. His value doesn’t really come from his offensive end, where he’s a lob threat, but from his defensive presence.
Despite being just 6’1″, Williams defends some of the best big men in the league, and he’s quite good at it. As Windhorst said, he’s on a smaller contract for his value, so if Portland is willing to part with him for a few picks, any playoff contender who wants a good defensive big man who’s a bit of a lob threat should jump on him.
