The Steam Deck’s gyro controls can be a useful tool for your handheld console, but not everyone is a fan. Here’s how to calibrate or disable your Steam Deck’s gyro controls.

The Steam Deck comes equipped with gyro controls to help you get extra precision in your favorite PC games. While gyro controls don’t offer the same precision you’d expect from a gaming mouse, aiming while moving your handheld can still give you faster reaction times than you’d get from using the handheld’s joysticks.

Unfortunately, gyro controls aren’t perfect. Sometimes you may need to recalibrate them to make sure they work properly. In other cases, they can hinder your gameplay rather than significantly improve your aim.

With that in mind, here’s how to calibrate and disable your Steam Deck’s gyro controls.

How to Calibrate Gyro Controls

  1. Turn on Steam Deck
  2. Press the “Steam” button
  3. Go to “Settings”
  4. Scroll down to “Controller”
  5. Go to “Calibration and Advanced Settings” and select Open
  6. Place the Steam Deck on a flat surface

To calibrate your Steam Deck’s gyro controls, we first need to find the settings. In the Steam Deck’s system settings, scroll down to the controller options and look for “Calibration & Advanced Settings.” Selecting the “Open” button will take you to the next step to recalibrate your handheld’s gyro controls.

On the new screen, you will be presented with your Steam Deck’s “gyroscope calibration” settings. Three bars will appear here, each with its own blue dot.

Each of these bars represents the pitch, yaw, and roll rates of your gyro controls, and the goal is to ensure that the blue dots stay centered when your Valve handheld is placed on a stationary surface.

To start the calibration process, select the “Calibrate” button. Just make sure to place your Steam Deck on your desk or any stable, flat surface nearby so it can properly calibrate the gyro controls. The process should only take a few seconds, and then you’ll be good to go.

How to disable gyro controls

  1. Access the game of your choice
  2. Select the controller icon
  3. Select “Gyroscope Behavior”
  4. Select “None”

If you’ve decided that the Steam Deck’s gyro controls aren’t for you, you can disable them in any game in your Steam library. First, select the game of your choice in your Steam library and navigate to its main page on your handheld console.

From there, select the small controller icon on the right side. If you’re having trouble finding the controller settings, they’re under the game banner, opposite your playtime. In your game’s controller settings, scroll down to “Gyro Behavior” and select “None” from the drop-down menu.
