Trae Young and Luka Doncic will always have their careers compared to each other because they were exchanged during an exchange on draft day. Doncic has been the best player in the NBA so far, but it goes without saying that Young has also had an exceptional first six years in the league, averaging 25.5 points and 9.5 assists per game.
Young recently sat down for an interview with A game worth millions of dollars and I had a few interesting comments on how being above average in height gives some players a huge advantage in their games.
“I used to say that. I just hated seeing guys that were big, that’s all,” Young said. “They can finish and do all that stuff. I mean, if I was 6’4”, I think I’d be the greatest player that ever played the game.”
Doncic is 6’1″, but that could be interpreted as a jab at someone like the Mavericks superstar. While Young doesn’t name names, it’s interesting to wonder if the roles were reversed and Doncic was 6’1″ and Young was 6’3″.
There’s no doubt that Doncic could still be effective even if he wasn’t an oversized guard, as he possesses elite vision and basketball IQ. That being said, his size allows him to finish at the rim, arrive at his step backwardsand bullies smaller defenders at a much higher rate. Those parts of his game wouldn’t be as effective if he were smaller.
Young probably didn’t have Doncic in mind when he made those comments, but fans will wonder what players in the league Young could possibly be thinking of that way. Their draft-day story will forever link the names of the two All-Stars, but it was probably more of a generalization.
