A former Los Angeles Laker has shockingly hinted that he may be willing to give up on a return to the NBA.
In today’s fast-paced NBA, the art of the physically dominant big man seems to be disappearing. With power forwards and centers becoming more athletic, some of the 2020 championship team that stood out in the league for its raw strength may have been forced out of the league — and it weighed on the situation.
“I’m not going to try to convince these guys anymore,” Cousins said on the “Club 520” podcast Monday. “You know what I bring to the field. It’s been proven. If you really wanted to know who I am, you’d take the time to get to know me instead of listening to somebody else. I don’t want to try to reach out to me anymore. If an opportunity comes up that makes sense, I’ll consider it, but I’m done with convincing.”
Cousins had a brief stint with the Lakers during the team’s championship season in 2020. The Kentucky product didn’t get a chance to make an impact with the Los Angeles team, but he did receive a championship ring for his short stint. Now, Cousins finds himself sidelined from the league after the 6-foot-2 center has become a shadow of his former self.
The 34-year-old could still have an impact on some teams around the league, but it seems he’s realized that fate is about to take a turn for the worse. Just a few years ago, someone of his caliber could dominate, but the former Lakers’ style of play has quickly become obsolete.
If Cousins were to retire today, he would leave the game as a 4x NBA All-Star, 2x All-NBA Second Team, and 2x gold medalist.
