Sam Amick of The Athletic made headlines with his recent take on the future of the Warriors franchise and what they could do to improve the team. It’s no secret that Golden State fell short By acquiring Paul George this offseason, it would make sense for them to look for a player of similar caliber.
“Jimmy Butler is a free agent next summer. He didn’t get an extension. The Warriors, as you know, are interested in him and I think they probably made some calls over the summer.” said Amick.
Pairing Butler with Stephen Curry seems like a fantastic idea if you’re Golden State, but is it realistic?
The Miami Heat would potentially be open to the idea, with Butler’s contract about to expire at the end of the season. The star forward has a player option for 2025-26, but there is no guarantee Butler will exercise it.
Miami is still a fringe contender in the Eastern Conference, but if the Heat get off to a slow start to the season, trading the six-time All-Star could be a smart move.
“We haven’t discussed it internally yet,” said Pat Riley on a possible extension during his exit interview in 2024.
The deal could get done, but both sides should weigh the pros and cons. Even if the deal looks good on the surface, there are a lot of things that need to change and both teams should feel like it’s time to change direction.
If Miami doesn’t look like a championship contender by the trade deadline and the Warriors decide Kuminga isn’t a top-tier player, a Butler to Golden State trade starts to look realistic.
