NBA rosters can always be improved, especially for those hoping to compete for a championship.
The Philadelphia 76ers have arguably their best team of the Joel Embiid era, thanks in large part to the addition of star Paul George. The Sixers’ management has also brought in former Miami Heat player Caleb Martin, who made his playoff debut to fill the void at power forward.
Martin’s place in the rotation is uncertain, according to Bleacher Reportbecause they ranked him among the 76ers’ top trade candidates.
“Martin signed one of the most lucrative deals for the team this offseason, agreeing to $35 million over the next four years,” B/R’s Greg Swartz wrote. “That’s about 5.5 percent of the cap for a player who can play both forward positions and has played 45 playoff games with the Miami Heat.”
Martin is an interesting player for any title contender, but the problems stem mostly from his fit with Philadelphia. The 76ers’ lack of size is often cited as their biggest flaw. If the right opportunity presents itself to add size with a big man, like Robert Williams III, it’s hard to imagine Daryl Morey passing on that opportunity.
The former Heat forward averaged just 4.4 rebounds last season, while his defense was nothing to write home about. The deal made sense at the time, given that the Heat offered him a much larger deal, but in February, that tenure could be up.
