Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has suggested that Antony’s poor attitude in training is the reason for his lack of prominence so far this season.

Despite being linked with a move away this summer, the Brazil international has underlined his determination to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place in Ten Hag’s plans.

United have had a mixed start to the Premier League season with two wins and two defeats, with Antony yet to start a game.

He came on in added time in the 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break and was not seen after being on the bench in the weekend’s 3-0 win at Southampton.

Ten Hag was asked why Antony has not been given more playing time and the Dutch coach had a clear message for his former Ajax winger.

“We train every day and the players have to earn the right to play,” he told a pre-match press conference in midweek.

“When players do the right things in training, when they have a good attitude and perform well in training, they earn the right to play.”

United host Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on September 17, and Antony could get a chance with ten Hag as the EFL League One side travel to Manchester.

Ten Hag’s side return to Premier League action on September 21 when they travel to Crystal Palace.
