Sometimes NFL analysts find a term that they use sparingly but that has a lot of impact. Then they start using that term over and over again, and it starts to lose its luster.

Recently, there has been talk of “generational talent.” This term can mean different things to different people, but when Trevor Lawrence left Clemson, he was called a “generational talent.”

He may well have had success with the Tigers, winning the 2018 national championship as a freshman. He had an impressive 34-2 career record in college, finishing with 10,098 passing yards, 90 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Lawrence with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The generational talent was paired with Urban Meyer and was expected to help turn the franchise around. After Meyer was fired shortly into his first season, Jacksonville replaced him with Doug Pederson, who won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018.

Three years later, the team is 21-31 combined and has started the 2024 season 0-3. Since last season, Lawrence has lost the last eight games he has started. As a quarterback, he bears the brunt of the blame. Let’s take a look at Lawrence’s performance in his last seven games and try to figure out what went wrong.

Trevor Lawrence’s last seven starts

Week 13 vs. Bengals: 34-31 overtime loss

Lawrence and the Jaguars had won two straight games and entered Week 12 with an 8-3 record. They beat the Titans in Week 11 and the Texans in Week 12 for two huge division wins. The Bengals had Jake Browning as their starter and the Jaguars had a good chance at another division title.

Tied 28-28, Jacksonville’s momentum was shattered in the fourth quarter when Lawrence was sacked with 5:43 left and forced to leave the game. That drive ended with a missed field goal. The quarterback was unable to return to the game, and Jacksonville lost in overtime despite receiving the ball first.

Before his injury, Lawrence had put in a pretty solid performance.

Week 14 vs. Browns, 31-27 loss

Lawrence was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, but he was still able to play the following week against the Browns. This was a significant injury, as it was thought to have a lasting effect on his game, as evidenced by his poor numbers against another team that had a backup quarterback.

Week 15 vs. Ravens, 23-7 loss

The Jaguars had lost two straight games and were facing a tough Baltimore team. Lawrence managed to pull through but was later placed in concussion protocol. In addition to the stats below, he lost two fumbles. Jacksonville was shut out in the first half and scored its only touchdown in the third quarter.

Week 16 of 2023 against the Buccaneers, lost 30-12

Lawrence managed to clear concussion protocol for that game. Unfortunately, he left the field in the fourth quarter of that game against Tampa Bay with a sprained shoulder joint. That injury caused him to miss Jacksonville’s Week 17 game. Lawrence fumbled the ball twice in that game, but only lost one.

Week 18 vs. Titans, 28-20 loss

Lawrence’s air-conditioning sprain kept him out of the Jags’ Week 17 game against the Carolina Panthers. Jacksonville won that game 26-0. When the quarterback returned in the final week of the regular season, it wasn’t enough to beat the Titans — or make the playoffs.

Week 1 vs. Dolphins, 20-17 loss

The 2024 season begins and Jacksonville is getting a fresh start. Calvin Ridley is in Tennessee, but the Jaguars have brought in Gabe Davis to pair with Christian Kirk and Evan Engram on offense. Lawrence was sacked three times in this game, but looking at the stats, you notice how few attempts and completions he had. The Jaguars led 17-7 at halftime and were shut out in the second half.

Week 2 vs. Browns, 18-13 loss

Jacksonville started slowly at home in Week 2. The Jaguars didn’t score in the first quarter and scored just once in the next few quarters. Jacksonville has only scored three touchdowns in two games, and Lawrence has only scored one. The quarterback fumbled the ball once against the Browns but was able to recover it.

Week 3 vs. Bills, 47-10 loss

The Jaguars never stood a chance against the Bills on Monday Night Football. Star quarterback Josh Allen dismantled Jacksonville for 263 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Lawrence had no answer, throwing for just 178 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The game was so unbalanced that the reserves played most of the fourth quarter.

What’s wrong with Trevor Lawrence?

It will be a combination of factors. His accuracy has been very inconsistent. He struggles with interceptions and fumbles. The Jaguars’ offensive line isn’t doing him any favors this year either. Lawrence has already been sacked seven times this season. Given his injury history from last season and the hits he’s already taken, it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s already dealing with a minor injury, and it’s only Week 4.

Trevor Lawrence Contract

Jacksonville has more confidence in its quarterback than fans currently do. Jaguars management picked up the fifth-year option that kept him under contract through the 2025 season.

Jacksonville then extended him for another five years for $275 million. Lawrence is now under contract through 2030 and has $200 million guaranteed. They have a potential departure before the 2029 season, by Spotracbut it will take another five full seasons.
