The way that the NFL schedule is set up, teams in opposite conferences tend to go four years without playing other. Week 5’s “Monday Night Football” game will be the first contest between the Saints and Chiefs since 2020, and only the second since 2016.
Even though the Saints as a whole haven’t seen much of the Chiefs, there are a few players who are quite familiar with Kansas City. Defensive tackle Khalen Saunders, injured linebacker Willie Gay and safety Tyrann Mathieu all played for the Chiefs, and this will be their first time facing their former team.
While he never played for Kansas City, New Orleans quarterback Derek Carr is likely the most familiar with them. When playing for the Oakland and then Las Vegas Raiders, Carr would see the Chiefs twice a year. All told, he has faced them 17 times during the regular season. Derek Carr’s record vs. Chiefs
Carr was a second-round pick by the Raiders in 2014. Las Vegas didn’t take long to start him, letting him start all 16 games as a rookie. He faced Kansas City for the first time in Week 12. The Raiders and Carr won that game 24-20, but, despite the hot start, his success against the franchise didn’t last long.
Carr has a career 3-14 record against the Chiefs. After starting 1-0, he has gone 2-14 against the Chiefs since. The only other wins Carr posted against Kansas City came in 2017 and 2020.

Derek Carr’s stats vs. Chiefs
Carr has largely been very middle-of-the-road against Kansas City. His best game against them was during a Week 7 game in 2017, when he finished with 417 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Sure, Carr has struggled against Kansas City, but with such a bad record, you could argue that his numbers could be worse, especially in the touchdown-to-interception department.
